Hey Brad,
I just did a little test. Try this. From the timeline, select the picture and “open in timeline.” Apply the crop to the image at full resolution. Now go back to the main timeline ( cmd-[ ) and apply the Ken Burns effect.
If you have a bunch of images at the same resolution that require the same crop, you could copy the image that you’ve cropped and paste the crop effect to the other images in their timelines.
Hope it works and let us know what you decide on.

I have found, on much more than one occasion, that delivery requirements are just wrong. There’s usually a little back and forth with the client, with me explaining how it should work, and them saying, “ok, your way sounds good to me.” My guess is that the “8-bit” part of the equation was wrong.
Sometimes, I think the young interns who grew up making web videos are the ones writing the delivery guides. Wow, now I’m venting… Sorry, nice interns, you are all great and you will all rule the world one day.

Don, I also have a 3,1 and recently upgraded the RAM to 16GB and got a Radeon 5870. The 5870s work in the 3,1 and got better performance benchmarks than the 5770s. I’m not a graphics card geek, so I defer to others who might have a better opinion on which card to get. Be careful if you get a 5870 online since some might be PC models that have been flashed. I got a Mac model on Craigslist. So, it was a good deal.
Blackmagic is best price, I think. AJA has always had excellent support. I have a Kona 3 and there are still some issues with X. But since upgrading to the 5870, things run very smooth.
Overall, my performance did increase with the upgrades and I think I’ll get another year or two out of the system. How much of a performance increase I am getting, though, I couldn’t tell you. Most importantly, I have pretty solid video playback now.

That’s nice to hear. I remember when they used to demo all around town. I went to the show in LA last week and they weren’t there, to my knowledge. I saw the Magma box. Curious to see it in action.

Thoreau: quick, unfortunately, isn’t always an option when doing complex things, especially if your system is having issues with playing 4 tracks at the same time. plus, Agreed with tony – add timecode filter.

I’ve purposefully jumped into FCPX full-force on certain projects to see what works and what breaks. At an industry event I went to the other night, I was telling people what was working for me and what wasn’t. The general consensus among facility managers, editors, etc… that I spoke to was that they had no real use for FCPX right now. Most have gone back to Avid and are waiting for Premiere to mature a bit more.
I see great potential in X, but also I experience harsh realities every time I use it. I would still label X as too buggy and unreliable. But that is not stopping me from using it on some projects.
What stops me from using it is that most of my production clients don’t have FCPX and don’t want it – or have no editors trained in it. So, when I use FCPX, I’m basically on an island. The production co’s don’t want me to use it because they can’t get back into the projects to do future work.
I’ve been diving into Premiere, as well. Again, great potential here. My general feeling is 6.5 will be the “killer app.”
At the last LAFCPUG event, Michael Horton felt that FCPX would bounce back within 36 months. I think given the negative feelings about X and the amount of work still needed on it, that’s about right.

To confirm, FCP7 took the expected time of 36 minutes to export. Now, I’ve just set FCP7 to export with the “Recompress all Frames” button selected. It is estimating the export will take about 2 hrs. Again this is from a 1hr 30 minute timeline.
I have absolutely no confirmation here, but perhaps FCPX does not yet have the ability to copy rendered frames to an exported ProRes? Hopefully that is something that we can get back soon.
