  • Getting text to look good in FCP X

Posted by Christoph Gelfand on May 24, 2012 at 2:12 am

Cutting a simple 1080p 29.97 ProRes project using FCP 10.0.4 and Lion 10.7.3. Using Helvetica titles (created in Photoshop CS 5.1 anti aliased). Feeding out via Matrox MXO2 to FSI 17″ monitor the text has jagged edges. It’s usable, but it is not up to my standards. By contrast, Motion titles look good in the exported QT file, but exhibit the same jagged edges as FCP X. This leads me to believe that it is an issue with X. Any ideas?

Make sure you are set to show both fields. It’s in the pulldown by the viewer.

Also set to high quality vs better performance in the preferences.

What are your Matrox output settings? Under the little extra FCP X section of the control panel. Sounds like your outputting anamorphic or DVCProHD type setting. Stairstepped graphics are very evident in DVCProHD (1280×1080 or 960×720) material.

Or you aren’t setup for psf/p out, but rather 1080i, when your timeline is p.

I really don’t think it’s a Matrox issue since I still see the issue on the Quicktime outputs. I also attempted to use text I produced in FCP, but no difference. I have to use Helevetica since I am trying to match the same standard font the client used prior to hiring me.

    Then we need more info.

Are you scaling or moving the image?

How bout a screen grab to see exactly the jaggedness?

I did not scale the image but I did move it around the frame to center it- could that be the issue? Will post a grab tomorrow morning.

Surely. Your exact workflow from start to finish would help.

Frame sizes and all from Ps to X.

Here’s a still from the timeline. This looks the same whether I use FCP X titles or Photoshop titles. The project is 1080p 29.97. The titles for this project were all exported PSD files. They were repositioned using the Transform function is FCP X but they look the same with no transform parameters set.
