Hi Bill,
Thanks for the input. I tried making a compound clip out of the entire timeline. That didn’t work. Then I added a broadcast safe to the compound clip so that it gave FCPX something to render to a new file. That didn’t work, either. As I mentioned, it renders out just fine on my Mac Pro. So, I really think it’s isolated to some issue on my system (what that is, I haven’t a clue).
Also, the timeline is pretty basic. It is just under 4 minutes. There are some titles and there are some stacked dissolves at the end of the timeline, but only 2 layers worth. So if there was a slowdown you’d think the progress bar would go further before stalling.
I haven’t tried new footage yet. But I will later on. I have been teetering on reinstalling the OS on the laptop just to see if it improves general performance and not necessarily to fix this problem. So might do that sometime next week and hopefully it will be a nice side effect of a fresh install.
Will try out some new footage later to see if that does anything. It’s just getting stuck. The time keeps increasing. Adobe Media Encoder takes 8-12 minutes to render at the same settings.

I had the same issue. I fixed it by going to the Project Library, select the project, open the info pane, and select modify event references. Now, just click on the correct drive (even if it’s the only one in there). That should bring it back.

I think we’ll start to see more of this with fresh projects. Meaning, projects that are starting up with no ties to other NLEs.
If it works out in the long-run for FCPX, I think it’ll start with the smaller houses (such as mine), independent filmmakers, editors, etc… like it did with FCP legacy. It just needs enough people to say, “I used it. It worked great for X, Y, and Z and I couldn’t use the other guys’ NLEs because of these reasons…”
I’d start a job in it and hire editors for it, given the right project/client/etc…

As an alternative to Compressor – I just made an mpg2 file for broadcast the other day. There’s a preset in Adobe Media Encoder. Worked great. Just made a couple tweaks to the setting.

Hey Nick,
The file should still be there. It will be in Final Cut Projects:Project Name:Shared Items. I don’t think X will know whether or not you have a Pro account, so you would have to compress using another program to get it down to size from the original.

I have read in places that Premiere is working pretty well with tape import/output. But I’d be curious to hear other people’s input on that one.
As has been said before, FCP7 does work on Lion. But I’ve found that it works a *little* better in Snow Leopard.
My gut says Adobe is probably the way to go for you for it’s tape support. Still, I recommend playing with FCPX to see if it’s something you might like. Given it’s price, there might be an application for it in your future.
I’m becoming a big fan of Adobe Media Encoder. Since you make a lot of DVDs, you’ll find that it’s very fast. I like it much more than Compressor.
A long time ago I used Adobe Encore for making a DVD and a Bluray. I liked it. Barring bugs and weirdness that I don’t know about, I think it’s probably a great alternative to DVDSP. And it’s integration with Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite is great.

Maybe they meant 90% IRE? I’ve seen some delivery req’s ask for subs IRE less than 100%. But I third the above messages – 100% opacity is the way to go.
