My google-fu is failing me on this.

I have a 38min SD project that I want to upload to Vimeo. I chose the SD Video Sharing size (reported file size 495.09MB) and it processed, taking 24:25 (MP 2.8quad), but it failed due to the file size being too large (not a plus account currently).

I thought Apple had set this feature to do size-based compression for upload simplicity. I assume the other option is to send it out to Compressor (or Adobe Media Encoder, Handbrake, etc.) and then upload the resulting file.

What happened to the resulting compressed file? Is it secretly stored on my computer or is it deleted after the aborted handshake with Vimeo?

    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hey Nick,

The file should still be there. It will be in Final Cut Projects:Project Name:Shared Items. I don’t think X will know whether or not you have a Pro account, so you would have to compress using another program to get it down to size from the original.

Thanks, Michael! I didn’t know about the nested “Shared Items” folder. I usually export to an exports folder that I process from.

I didn’t expect FCPX to know what type of Vimeo account I had, but I’d read (unofficial) reports that FCPX would cap the file size for Vimeo’s stock upload sizes. Apparently not.

The file came out to be 524.3MB or about 29MB over the initial estimate. Understandable that that happens, but it makes the share function less useful, particularly without any available adjustments.

I find the share-to-vimeo very useful for shares of previews to clients over night (don´t need to wait for the render). And it also works. But the bitrate is usually too high.

My way of exporting to share masters on vimeo, youtube, Facebook etc is by using Share-Export using Compressor settings. Here you can use your optimized compressor setting and define the export-directory.

“The file should still be there”
It’s there only so long as Final Cut is open. The file on your hard drive is deleted once FCPX closes.

I find it much more reliable to 1. Send to compressor. 2. Upload to Vimeo or Youtube etc. The direct share often had some problem. Compressor has some reasonable settings for uploading to online servieces and in my case, the compressed file ends up in movies file. More steps, but better control.
