  • Thanks Mike for your advice here. I’ll do the capture to DV AVI. Thanks for your bit rate suggestions also. Very much appreciated.

  • Thanks again for your reply John. Yes, I will be using Vegas Pro to edit, so I’ll do the capture in Vegas. Cheers John.

    Hi John,

Thankyou for your advice here. I had a look at this device, and it is a really good piece of kit for this type of operation. But yeah, this will only be for a quick one-off operation for me. However, if the resulting quality from a USB to MPEG2 device is really bad to work with, I may end up buying one of these.

    Your advice is always appreciated.

Thanks for your help Phil. I don’t have either piece of equipment as yet, but as a good capture card is cheaper than most old dvd recorder combo units, and is easily stored away, I will take that option.

Can Vegas pro 11 do the capture operation? Or will vegas have any issues recognising/editing the mpeg 2/4 file?

  • Hi again. I have stabilised the footage, now need to uprez. I have checked out your tutorial for BCC Uprez. Before I get started, just would like to know if the results from Uprez will be superior to a crop and resize, then a render to HD?

  • Thanks for your advice again John. Very helpful and much appreciated.

  • I tried stabilising the footage as media fx, but Mercalli wouldn’t let me. It said that I had to click on the clip. It seems that I need to drag the whole clip onto the timeline, then apply Mercalli as an Event fx. Does this sound right?

Would I need to render before editing? Or save this project, and nest it in another project?

  • Thanks for your reply John. I checked out your tutorial episodes, which were very good.

What stabilisation settings would you recommend whilst not sacrificing too much quality?

As for the uprez, is there much difference in quality compared to a crop and resize, then render in Hd?

That’s great regarding the ‘no loss’ of quality. Can I trouble you for the best project and render settings to create a Bluray compliant mpge2 file?

I assume rendering from 1080i to 1080p is definitely the way to go. Would this be correct?

Thanks for your help with this Mike.
