You always want to stabilize the original media so the correct order is to stabilize first and then uprez the result.

What stabilisation settings would you recommend whilst not sacrificing too much quality?

As for the uprez, is there much difference in quality compared to a crop and resize, then render in Hd?

I usually start with the default Universal Camera and see how stable it gets. I like to use Glide Camera if there is panning in the shot. You can adjust the Border property to add more or less stabilization based on how much zoom you can tolerate in your content.

I tried stabilising the footage as media fx, but Mercalli wouldn’t let me. It said that I had to click on the clip. It seems that I need to drag the whole clip onto the timeline, then apply Mercalli as an Event fx. Does this sound right?

Would I need to render before editing? Or save this project, and nest it in another project?

Yea, the mercalli plug-in that comes with Vegas Pro needs to be used as a Media FX but the full version doesn’t. It’s confusing I know.

Yes, that’s the correct procedure.

All good choices and it’s really up to you. I like to render the stabilized media and drop it back into the project but that’s a personal preference. If you are going to use UpRez I would definitely render it out because UpRez requires that you change the properties of the media which would probably confuse Mercalli so… Stabilize -> Render -> UpRez is my suggested workflow. You could also use a nested project. That should behave the same way as rendering.

Hi again. I have stabilised the footage, now need to uprez. I have checked out your tutorial for BCC Uprez. Before I get started, just would like to know if the results from Uprez will be superior to a crop and resize, then a render to HD?

Yes. The key to this is because of the complex sharpening that is done when you use the Magic Sharp option. It “intelligently” sharpens rather than blindly sharpening everything.
