Have you checked your audio settings? Are you set to always convert? How are you importing whats your project?

I think you may be on to something here… only problem is that I have 10 installed and in utilities I have 7.6.3, when I go to install 7.6.4 it doesn’t let me… I’m now trying to uninstall ten in order to get 7.6.4 which is already proving to be challenging. I’ll keep you posted.

Avid will import the audio and give you a track with media and all, but if it doesn’t like the codec it simply will not play it… My suggestion, being that I’m pretty sure avid does not handle mpeg4 audio is to take the file and export the audio as an aiff or wav through wither quicktime pro, or compressor or sorenson.
