I love you Shane… ok, maybe just like would be more appropriate. 😉
I tried so many compression settings that I almost went mad! and it seems that the way apple word their error messages need to be updated quite substantially.

    Thanks again,

ps. so you have a list somewhere of all your stock answers? is it private or can we have a look?

    Let me get this straight.
You export your animation out of AE as a Black Magic 10bit file.
Now you import it into FCP and it doesn’t play back realtime?

I capture my footage with the 8bit Black Magic Codec and it’s realtime. Are you sure that your sequence settings in FCP are for 10bit Blackmagic?

You need to render to a file format that supports alpha channels.
(ie. Quicktime, .tga sequence, .tiff sequence…)

If for instance you rendered a targa sequence, ensure that you render at 32bit. (24 bit for the colour and 8 bit for the alpha channel)

Now, as long as you have no background layer in AE, when you import this sequence into premier you’ll have a nice lower third animation with an alpha channel.

    hope that helped

Second from the bottom of the effects window for that layer, turn off proportional spacing.

    Hope that helps

I would say if your programs and scratch disk/capture disk are on different drives then you’re on the right path.

    Hi Eric,

Having a raid system for your video and scratch drive is a good idea. What level of raid are you thinking? Here’s a link for your reading pleasure.
    https://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=830

Personally I would do it like this.

2 x hard drives (Raid 1 – mirrored) for your system files and your project information, since this is extremely important information. You don’t want to lose this data if your drive goes down, but you could recapture your video/ export your mpeg again.

3 x hard drives (Raid 0 – striped without parity) for your speedy video and scratch drive. Note this level of raid won’t save you if one of the hard drives goes down, but if you read the article above you’ll see that the controllers for a higher levels of raid are a bit more pricey. Although it may be worth it. I like to have peace of mind.

I hope that helped. (Don’t know if your motherboard can handle 2 raid systems?) You might need an extra card for that.

    Regards,
    Michael

November 16, 2005 at 12:17 pm in reply to: more efficient way to mask?

Could you explain a bit more? I brought a single video layer in to test your theory and when I turned off the little eye button, my layer dissapeared? And I thus couldn’t see the outline I was trying to mask?
    Thanks
