    Hello!

(Sorry for cross-posting on PP and AE forum, but this question has to do with drive configuration related to both apps)

I will be getting a new PC soon, and I am planning on having several drives installed. I am a little unsure about where I should put projects, captured video, conformed audio, etc., etc. with my new machine, so I would really appreciate if someone could look at what I’m planning to do, and tell me if I’m doing something that will work fine or not:

1 system drive, used ONLY for OS and programs

1 3-drive internal S-ATA RAID driven by a separate S-ATA controller, used for captured video, captured audio, rendered video/audio (from After Effects) and as scratch disks for Premiere and Photoshop.

1 additional S-ATA drive used for Premiere Project files, Premiere audio previews/conformed audio, Premiere Video previews, After Effects project files, After Effects’ disk cache, export drive (from Premiere) for mpeg-2 for DVD’s when I export from Premiere, and as a general “holding place” for miscellaneous stuff not being used in the current project.

Please look at my planned use of drives, and if any of my choices are bad or less than optimal, please let me know. I want to make sure that everything is done as correctly and efficiently as possible!

    Kind regards,
    Eric

    Hi Eric,

Having a raid system for your video and scratch drive is a good idea. What level of raid are you thinking? Here’s a link for your reading pleasure.
    https://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=830

Personally I would do it like this.

2 x hard drives (Raid 1 – mirrored) for your system files and your project information, since this is extremely important information. You don’t want to lose this data if your drive goes down, but you could recapture your video/ export your mpeg again.

3 x hard drives (Raid 0 – striped without parity) for your speedy video and scratch drive. Note this level of raid won’t save you if one of the hard drives goes down, but if you read the article above you’ll see that the controllers for a higher levels of raid are a bit more pricey. Although it may be worth it. I like to have peace of mind.

I hope that helped. (Don’t know if your motherboard can handle 2 raid systems?) You might need an extra card for that.

    Regards,
    Michael

    Thanks for your reply!

Actually, the drive configuration is fixed, since I am buying a preconfigured Matrox AXIO system. The only extra thing I’ve done is adding the 1 extra drive. I guess I wasn’t clear about what I’m really unsure about, so I’ll rephrase my question:
Given the drive configuration I am going to have, am I choosing the correct drives to put AE and PP projects, captured video, conformed audio, etc., etc.?

    Kind regards,
    Eric

I would say if your programs and scratch disk/capture disk are on different drives then you’re on the right path.
