Not really relevant to this thread, but I just wanted to point out that 5.1 PCM is in fact part of the HD DVD spec. This would of course eat up much of your bit-budget, given that you’re working with DVD-R.

Flag your 16×9 footage as pan-and-scan. I think that’s your best solution. This way the player will crop the 16×9 to 4:3 on NTSC monitors.

I’m assuming by loopable, you mean that you want each disc to loop, not all in a row. If I’m correct, you should use DVDAfterEdit. You just load in your disc, change the post command of the title you want to loop and compile/burn the new version.

Gear Mastering Edition will do this nicely for you. If you’re giving the DDP on a disc, make sure the files are in root directory. Otherwise you’ll get back a bunch of pressed discs with DDP files.

A burner is a burner – it will work on PC or Mac as long as the software recognizes it and Mac Toast should. I’m using PC, however.

Best solution I have for you is this: find someone who speaks Japanese to order a BDZ-V9 from Sony in Japan. It’s a Blu-ray standalone recorder that will take your 16×9 HDMI and burn Blu-ray discs. You’ll get all three – hardware encoding, 16×9, and HD picture.

Todd,
Like you say, the only issues we’ve encountered have been due to authoring errors. We use Scenarist HDMV, which I believe produces most compliant discs. We haven’t experimented much with Encore or DVDit.
As far as brands of discs, only top manufacturers are currently making Blu blanks, so you’ll be safe with any on the market. I think you can get Panasonic discs now for under $10. As cheaper no-name brands begin appearing, I would still advise to stick with the big names because one bad disc can potentially cost you a client.

Chris,
Go to your DVDSP preferences, click on “encoding” tab and select 16:9 under “Aspect ratio”. I bet yours was set to 4:3.Max

It’s actually not that hard to do. Set up a chapter mark 15 frames before the end of the track. Set the end jump for that chapter mark to your next track, and the end jump of the previous marker (it may be the entry mark in your case) to the menu. If you press skip, you will jump past that marker’s end command and land on the next track. Disable end jump command on the track and story. You have to also make sure you have a second of black at the tail of your tracks. You can export and encode a second of black, and just stick it on the track.
