March 18, 2009 at 5:56 pm in reply to: problems transferring HD QT files between computersOk thanks Shane,
But what if I want other people to use the footage, not just look at,in their editing systems, in this particular case someone with an Avid on Windows? My P2 cards have naturally already been erased, is there a way to put the original content/lastclip.txt files back on the card so it can be imported into an Avid system?
Or does all this require additional software?
I guess I’m looking for an easy way to share footage when the need arises.Matt

I’ve just been through this, it took me a while to figure out how to import from tape using the HVX 200.
What finally made the difference was to have the camera turned off when connecting the firewire cable. Have your FCP open, log and capture settings set to what you need and then turn on the camera and set it to tape.
From there on it behaved just like any other DV camera.

Anne,
if you are just doing DV, you could just get a cheap consumer DV camera with firewire and an analog output. Connect the 6 pin firewire from your computer to the 4 pin firewire at the camera and the analog out to the A/V in at your TV and you should be in business. Consumer DV cameras go for very little money these days. That’s if money is an issue. If not, then an external capture device like the Aja I/O or the Matrox will give you a lot more functionality and professional features.

Thanks guys,
that worked and you don’t even have to press record on the camera.
It’s true that there is no timecode pass through, but that may not be important in all situations. Would be nice if it did record the timecode though.Matt

I own both cameras. The XL2 is definitely the more advanced of the two. But it is heavier and not a run an gun type tool. Works best on a tripod, shoulder work very uncomfortable. Very nice picture quality in the DV realm.

You have to employ a rather tedious workaround.
Design the object or background in which the years are supposed to appear, type in the beginning year, duplicate times however many years you have, go in and change the years for each one and spread the text objects along the time line, one butting up to the next. For a faster count, make the duration of each text object short, for a slower count increase the duration.Put it all into its own layer and then you can apply behaviours to the layer, like throw, to make the counter move across the screen.
It is tedious but it works. -
“ALL European DVD players play NTSC, and most modern TVs will play it fine.”
True, but many of them will do so only in black and white, just something to be aware of.

Thanks for all the input.
Setting the deck to external didn’t work, that was one of the things I’ve tried,
but then I’ve used “print to video”. So I’ll try it with “edit to tape” and will report back.
Using the “dup” button didn’t work either, since the computer does not behave like a deck. If “edit to tape” won’t work I’ll try the camera route. -
Here’s my two cents worth:
I don’t have experience with automatic printers or burners, but I have a 7 disk burner tower w/HDD and a single disk Epson R300 printer. The printing always proves to be the bottleneck, depending on the length of the project I can burn 7 disks in the time that it takes to print one. So if you can, invest in some kind of automation, but I would definitely spend some time with the equipment to see what the quirks are before I’d leave it unattended. Duplicating seems fast, printing slow.
