    Hey friends,

I have used the P2 a bunch of times but never have had to capture off the tape – only cards – i did a search on this forum with no results and I do not have a manual to read so I am curious what i need to set the camera & FCP to.

It is currently switched to tape and in dub mode – i am waiting to get the specifics on what format the footage was shot at in order to do easy setup properly…

what am i doing wrong or right thus far : ) and what do i need to be aware of .

    thanks in advance

Have the HVX 200/202 (I guess this is hat you are using) set to “Tape” and connect the firewire cable to the camera and computer. Some say both units should be powered down when you connect the firewire cable.
You need to use “Log and Capture” (not log and transfer). You can use “command 8” as a shortcut to get it, or go to the “File” tab in the directory bar at the top of the screen, click and scroll down to the 18th item “log and capture”. When the window appears, go to the “capture settings” tab on the right of the window. Device control should be set to the Firewire setting you are using (either PAL or NTSC). Set the capture/input tab to the flavour of DV you recorded. You can customise a setting in the “Audio/Video settings” pull down menu (Top left under “Final Cut Pro” 5th item down the list) and name it so it’s easy to come back to.

If you recorded to tape they are SD DV25. The only difference would be the frame rate 30i, 30p, 24p or 24pA are the possibilities but only one know which one you need.

Ask for the manual and you shall receive.

AWESOME – you guys are all SO helpful – rock!!

So when shooting to tape on the P2 it only does dv25 huh – good to know.

PS – producer does nto know what format / frame rate this stuff was shot at and potentially there’s other footage on the tape which he thinks might be shot in different frame rates…

You should be able to tell the difference between 480i 60 and 480i 24/30. 24/30 will have a strobe look to you.

I’ve just been through this, it took me a while to figure out how to import from tape using the HVX 200.
What finally made the difference was to have the camera turned off when connecting the firewire cable. Have your FCP open, log and capture settings set to what you need and then turn on the camera and set it to tape.
From there on it behaved just like any other DV camera.

    Matt.

We were having issues using a client’s HVX200 as FW device and had jumped thru all the hoops in the manual with no success. I found this post and it worked like a charm. Thanks for posting…some year and 6 months ago. 🙂
