Thanks very much Andy, that did the trick!

  • Thanks for your reply, Jerry.

Capturing the anamorphic footage: should my capture presets aspect ratio be NTSC 4:3 or 3:2, and yes the anamorphic box should be checked? What should be my capture preset settings for the footage that I shot in letterbox mode?

Likewise will my sequence preset Frame Size aspect ratio be 4:3 rather than 3:2, and will my pixel aspect ratio will be NTSC – CCIR 601 etc with the anamorphic box unchecked?

I am hoping to do this where there will be no loss in quality in the footage if possible.

    Many thanks again..

  • Thank you Dave.

I did change the settings to 16:9 on my Sony studio monitor and the footage looks more stretched but still cropped at the corners. Hmmm..

  • Thanks Frank. I looked it over and set all the settings as instructed but the letterbox footage is still trimmed on the ends on my external monitor (but shows full frame in my browser window) and I still cannot seem to play back without the stuttering. Still cannot adjust the pulldown in the RT menu.

I need to send a 24pa letterbox-originated sequence to my collaborator, who also has FCP. Can I send him a Quicktime movie version that has been recorded on iDVD, or alternatively will iMovie-to-DVD work so that he can see my draft piece on his Mac?

And will I be able to export a sequence created with these settings to iDVD easily? Thanks.

In the Capture Preset Editor I have set the compressor fps at 29.97 and have checked the “Remove advanced pulldown and/or duplicate frames..” box. Does that sound good? Thanks again.

    Hello, Graeme –

It was actually your article on Ken Stone’s site that I was just referencing! Excellent information with very clear explainations. Pleased to meet you.

I shot the footage on a DVX100A in 24p Advanced mode. Some of it was shot with an anamorphic adapter and some in Letterbox mode. My capture settings are DV NTSC 48khz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown and 23.98 fps. My sequence preset is DV NTSC 23.98.

My intent is to cut together a draft demo reel of scenics put to music and burn it onto a DVD for my collaborator to see back east. I do not have DVD Studio Pro yet but was going to try to burn a DVD through iDVD. I will be upgrading from FCP 4.5 to the FCP suite next week.

    Many thanks,
    Kevin

This is my first time using 24p footage, yes. I just discovered some info on Ken Stone’s FCP site that said I did not have the correct RT Playback and Pulldown settings for my sequence. I set them to the higher quality settings and now it plays back as smooth as the original footage.

    Thanks for your reply.
