Sounds like you are being more complicated than you need to be. Why not just work in an 8fps composition, and export an 8fps movie for premiere?

  • I tend to consider a professional tool as “anything that gets the job done.” I like to try out new tools and see if they have a place in my workflow. I am also a big Affinity fan and have both Designer, and Photo. Affinity Photo’s FFT denoise tool is magic for removing halftone pattern from an image, a task that is very hard to do in Photoshop.

A big sticking point I have with Final Cut X, Resolve, and other editors that I have tried is the lack of a customizable layout, especially where multiple monitors are concerned. As has I have said, I like to try out new tools, learn new tricks, and optimize my workflow. Being able to tinker with the screen layout for my primary tools is a big part of that. After Effects/Premiere have always been good about this.

The latest Hit-Film also offers a lot of customization, and feels very Adobe like, so it was a tool I immediately felt comfortable with. I still would love to hear other people’s experience with it.

You could also try Google Earth Studio if you can deal with their watermark. Its really easy to use, piece of software for this sort of effect, and it will export Camera data to After Effects.

Unfortunately, I find the watermark on the render crippling. I would much rather put attribution in the credits.

If you would like to use Google Earth Studio watermark free, please “register your interest” by filling out the request form on this page:

I filled It out months ago, and nothing has yet come of it. I would love to be able to use this software without a watermark, so anyone who has a moment, please “register your interest.”

  • Radeon Pro Vega 64.
I’m still on Mojave so it shouldn’t be a latest OS problem.

    Thanks,

From what I have read, CPU clock speed is important, but AE can’t make use of multiple processor cores anymore, so fewer cores with a faster clock speed are better. A new 3.7Ghz Core i5 iMac may actually run AE faster/comparable to a 3.5GHz Xeon Mac Pro.

Unfortunately the mac lineup is geared towards multicore, and Adobe no longer codes AE to take advantage of that…

I’m not sure where the best bang for the buck is in an Apple machine for Premiere/After Effects these days, but I notice on my iMac pro that my 16GB of VRAM is always fully used, and I never come close to maxing my 64GB of RAM.

  • Hmmm… It might only show that informatation for things plugged in via HDMI. My iMac display and old Apple Thunderbolt Display don’t show it, and Apple makes it hard to find that info for some reason.

I can find more info for your display settings using SwitchResX, the program I mentioned before.
There is a free trial, so you can see if this is your issue:

You could also just try a lower resolution and see if they changes anything. According to LG’s website your monitor’s vertical refresh rate is “48~60Hz”. It might not support 60Hz at full resolution.

This is the thread that tipped me off to the 60Hz problem. Apparently it is a PC issue too.

  • What monitor do you have plugged into your Mac Pro, and how?

I was having no end of problems with RAM preview and After Effects. I discovered that After Effects RAM preview has issues if one of the connected displays is running at other than 60 Hz.

Go to “About this Mac” and choose “System Report”, then choose “Graphics/Displays” under the hardware menu. If any of the displays say they are running at less than 60 Hz, you need to fix it.

In my case I had a 4k Vizio television plugged in via HDMI, and unbeknownst to me it was running at 30 Hz. I had to get a different USBC to HDMI adapter, and use a program called SwitchResX to create a custom resolution to get it to play in 2k in 60Hz. The TV apparently doesn’t support 4k at 60Hz, even though it was advertised as a 4k 60Hz tv. It was one or the other.

After I got my display running at 60Hz it solved all sorts of RAM preview issues that I had been grinding my teeth over for months.

  • No one has talked much about software. It has been awhile since I have done Stop Motion, but AE is not the best software for the actual animating. (Compositing/Rig Removal Yes) To get really fluid animation you want something with onion skin capability, capable of grabbing frames and overlaying them in an onion skinned sequence with your live frame, and playing back quick bursts of them to test your motion.

The software I have used in the past is called DragonFrame: https://www.dragonframe.com.
This was great software, and allowed me to do a rough chroma key on my frames over a background plate (my stop motion was being composited with live footage).

If you have a mac, and are on a budget, you might try boinx stop motion: https://boinx.com/istopmotion/mac/
I have not used it, but it is inexpensive, and has been on my radar.

Both pieces of software have lists of supported and recommended cameras.

Lastly for the budget conscious if you have an iOS device, check out Stop Motion Studio: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stop-motion-studio/id441651297?mt=8
I haven’t done anything professional with it, but it has been great to play around with with my 5 year old son. It has a nice apple watch app for remote shutter on the iPhone, so you don’t bump the camera when taking a picture.

    Good luck,

  • If by remedial steps you mean quitting and relaunching. Restarting. I tried those and they didn’t work.
I then discovered that I somehow had two projects windows open in the project in question.
One worked as normal, the other misbehaved.
I closed the misbehaving one, and the problem has not recurred.

  • Premiere has been like his for several versions. I filed a bug report into the black hole of Adobe at one point. Unfortunately, I can’t update my Wacom driver because my tablet is too old.
Wacom works fine with everything but Premiere.

I keep a wired mouse plugged in just for Premiere.
