  • Smooth Map Zoom (Google Earth blocky loading)

Posted by Kyle Bellamy on February 26, 2020 at 4:10 pm

So I am a new-ish video editor with a ton of experience in audio recording and engineering but wanted to play with some things.

I have seen a smooth zoom in from a satellite view to a specific town or address but on trying something like Google Earth Pro, I get the blocky loading imagery which doesn’t look professional.

I was wondering where people get those trasitions done or with what software. I did some Google searching but I don’t have the right keywords I guess.

Thoughts? I have visions in my head, just can’t figure out how to get them out. lol

This software should be the go to choice for doing that. You can try to purchase a template or follow any tutorials on “zoom to earth” to see how it is done. “bird’s eye view” is another term that results in some things you may want.

When using after effects you would need to download several photos from your choice of map and stitch them up/align them in a composition then do the zooming, either with a camera or using exponential scalling.

There are templates available that automates the process of pre downloading and positioning inside a composition the maps that become available from Bing or Google maps (it uses their API). If you follow their tutorial you should be well set in replicating that.

Several templates can show you different looks you can go for, cloud usage, earth looks, zoom speed and so on. But that’s just personal taste.

You could also try Google Earth Studio if you can deal with their watermark. Its really easy to use, piece of software for this sort of effect, and it will export Camera data to After Effects.

Unfortunately, I find the watermark on the render crippling. I would much rather put attribution in the credits.

If you would like to use Google Earth Studio watermark free, please “register your interest” by filling out the request form on this page:

I filled It out months ago, and nothing has yet come of it. I would love to be able to use this software without a watermark, so anyone who has a moment, please “register your interest.”

Check out my plugins for AE, Premiere, Motion and FCP.

I was trying the “pro” version they had but this does seem better. Shame you have to sign up and then wait for a response.

I was thinking through ways to do it manually but that would take hours of zooming and taking shots and sticking together into clip or at least so it seems to me.

Thanks for the info. I will report back if something comes up that works.

Side note: bnot sure why this got shifted to AE channel since it was a general question and I am actually using Premier. I put it in Cinematography so it would reach the widest audience. That siad, galld it got here so you could answer but…
