Okay, i managed to convert it using MPEG Streamclip to a Apple Pro Res 422 Proxy (Which I’ve been told is a good editable codec) from a xvid format, and it appears to be working fine now.

    Hey there,

Quick update, my files were formatted xvid, and were not playing in MPEG Streamclip, so I couldn’t convert them. So I downloaded a program called Perian “The Swiss Army Knife for Quicktime” and they started playing in MPEG Streamclip. Now to see if I can actually convert them into a workable format for editing.

I figured I would post my progress, any info is good info.

There would be no way to make it work in FCP? I don’t have access to Premiere.

I didn’t know MPEG actually ripped DVD’s, does it do it even with the protected DVD’s? (I’m editing together a pitch for some exec’s)

And one final question, sometimes, after bringing in the converted file from MPEG into FCP, the sound is out of sync. Why is that?

Well I’m currently between jobs right now, so money is tight around the household. I’m still somewhat of a beginner to post production and am still trying to straighten out my workflow. I do have 3tbs worth of hard drives connected, but I was just curious if there was a way to save space.

Okay, I’m already too far into it to change the codec, but I’ll remember it for next time. Something else I was wondering about was I’m ripping these DVD’s, and the file sizes are 20 gigs on average, is there any way to make that smaller without hurting the quality of the image?

I’m using a Firewire, 9-4 pin. I moved the video file to the desktop and it plays fine now. the file size is around 20 gigs, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Right now I’m converting it to DV using MPEG Streamclip. That’ll do it right?

Well I may of figured it out. I was editing using H.264, which, as it turns out is not an editing codec. So thats a major bummer.

Awesome, thanks a bunch, I shall name my first born fter you. But one last question, what is the best codec to be using for FCP? As it turns out I’m using H.264, because the footage I’m working with I ripped from a dvd. Is there like a top ten or something?
