That makes perfect sense, on small hitch would be that when you create a displacement map or compound blurs (I’m using AE) the background color needs to be 128,128,128. I could do alphas, but I can never get the nice defined edges that I see in PI.
Actually, I know exactly what I will do, I’ll make them exactly as you suggested, but against a black background, and then in AE, simply use Knoll Unmult, the best free plugin ever made. Then it’s a simple precomp and it’s done.
Thanks Alan.

Alan, won’t that method produce many copies of just the same picture?
Is it possible to randomize say a group of 20 different photos to be emitted, or would you need to create 20 overlapping emiiters, or a super emitter where each minor emitter has a different photo?

July 17, 2008 at 10:34 pm in reply to: ParticleViewr not finding my main Illusion LibrariesThat did it. It didn’t automatically start off and build the index, it loaded the 1 inside PV. I did the “Add”, restarted, and it told me there had been a change do I want to update? I updated and it built the thing properly.
Thanks for all of your help.
Help like this is one of the reasons I keep telling people to buy this software. So many folks out there don’t take it as a serious app, and my 3D buddies and visual effects guru friends are constantly amazed when I put something together, and tell them I used it.

July 17, 2008 at 7:42 pm in reply to: ParticleViewr not finding my main Illusion LibrariesAdd will not allow me to choose a directory, just a library. And now, I am getting a Runtime Error and shutdown every time I try and search.
I’m going to do a quick reg clean and try again.
Should I be installing this inside the main Illusion directory? If so, why does it create its own folder?
If not, I have no idea what I am doing wrong.
THanks for the help John.

Quicktime 7.4 is notorious for being incompatable with AE.
I don’t know how to strip my regisrty, other that to use a 3rd party pulgin, uninstall quicktime, try and clean it, reinstall quicktime 6 and try again. so far that hasn’t goetten me far. But I will try again.

How in the heck did I miss that?
I tried doing exactly what the Tutorial 3 section described and it wouldn’t work. I’ve crated custom shapes for things like heat ripples, so I am familiar with importing shapes with alpha from Photoshop.
So when I read the tutorial, and saw the part about an image sequence, and saw video files recognized as available shapes, I shrugged my shoulders and tried again.
Damn me if it didn’t work. Of course, I now had an emitter spewing tiny video clips of me having my head explode (from another AE Tutorial [Thanks Andrew]), but it worked like a charm.
Thanks for putting the Mojo into my version of Illusion Alan. As soon as I get a couple of nice working emitters from different angles, I will post them here.
Lastly, have you guys ever thought about having competitions to see who can create some great effect specific emitters? I know you take the time to create some each month, and a contest might lighten your work load, as well as motivate people to become even more versed in the software. And it may also give the users some really nice emitters as well.
Just a thought.
Thanks again.

Thank you very much.

If you have an editor like After Effects, Shake, Combustion, etc (heck, even Photoshop), you can get that effect by either turning it into a 3D layer and rotating it, or Batch Processing with the Free Transform in PS (Yes ouch, but it’d work).
