To answer the question, though, if you mount the card a second time after shooting more footage on it, in the L&T window the little circle to the left of the clip will be either blue(if you imported the whole clip) or half blue (if you marked an in/out and imported just a portion of the clip). As long as you are in the same project, FCP will remember the card and know what you’ve imported and what you haven’t. Not the best way to do it, but its a good double check .
That will be the way that you can tell what you have imported and what you haven’t. We get this all the time doing instant shows at tradeshows where we have multiple people shooting and cards flying at us from all directions. Organization will save your butt 95% of the time, but this little trick has saved me from wiping a non imported card several times.
I’m one of the bad ones, at instant shows we ingest right off the card. Never had a problem, but it is possible that something bad could happen.

Not neccessarily. DVCPROHD is not square pixels, in fact there are few HD formats that are true square pixels. Sad, really, i thought we would be able to get away from the non square nonsense. I think its mostly a layover from tape based HD. DVCPROHD was initally a tape based HD format, so to save bandwidth, they “anomorphized it” probably more complicated than that, but the end result is that it’s not square. Just go into PS and look at the pixel aspect ratio selections in the new documentbox. it shows what most of them are.

Whoa, boy. Hold on, lets not go nuts, lets try some trouble shooting first off. If its the media that’s the problem, then a fresh install won’t help and you’ll have wasted 4 hours for nothing.
1) Put all your plugins back in place and see if it will open the project without the media drives hooked up. Works= then you knwo its the media not an issue with the software, which I don’t think it is because I’m assuming (maybe wrongly) that you have tried to open/create other projects to see if it will open them. Didn’t Work= Then it might pay to reinstall, but try trashing all prefs and all the prefs for your 3rd party plugins and reinstall the plugins.
2) take a look at the media on the media drive. Can you open the QT’s and view them? I had one editor send me a project with all the media files, but he had made them all reference files without knowing, and it was hell trying to figure that one out. Until I looked at the files sizes of the media files, and realized what was going on.
Try those and report back, this is an interesting problem. Would be nice to have a documented fix for it for others.
FWIW, the FCP application or any of its components rarely just “go bad” and need to be reinstalled. Its usually a 3rd party incompatability or your moving stuff and messing with stuff you normally wouldn’t. i’ve been guilty of that as well.

Durn it, usually I right click on everything, just to see what happens, but I missed that one!
Just on the basis of knowing, it would be nice to know if there is a way to get FCP to do it for me as well. But this is the perfect way to make me smile for now.

Really? I have CS3 Extended. I’m guessing I’m using the wrong format to save in, then. Would you happen to have a link to the post that you found this in? Guess I’m guilty of not doing a thorough search of the forums before posting. I’ll slap myself on the wrist with a ruler for that one…

Also, check in compressor and see what the “Motion Estimation” drop menu is set to. There is a huge difference between Better and Best in terms of encoding time. You might have had it set at Better on your old machine, and might be set at Best on the new one.
I’ve been buggered by this before.

Ditto. DW has saved my arse more times than I care to count. Anyone remember the old biege Avid SCSI drives? Almost a monthly occurance.
Anyway, try opening it without the media drives as mentioned. that usually works, as fcp is sometimes trying to relink stuff that it can’t find. Also check your plugin folder. I’ve had plugins go funky on me. remove any 3rd party plugins, and try to open it. As always, do all this testing on a COPY of your FCP file. No need to screw it up more by troubleshooting.
Since it opens on other boxes, your “freak out” level should be fairly minimal. try opening the project, make a small change so that FCP will make an autosave of it, then take that autosave to the troublesome machine and try to open that. Autosave makes completely new files when it saves, whereas the “save” function just updates the current file, which might have something wrong with it already.

Found my answer in the Kona forum, turns out I was being a bit of a wanker, and didn’t know there was an update to the kona control panel. This allows some filtering of the output formats. So, I guess AJA DID read my mind, I just didnt know it yet…
