    Hey Jacob…and all,

    Of course my “two cents” — “from my consultative viewpoint.”

    I’m sorry you’re having these problems.

    As simple as it may seem, you might try to power it all down, re-seat all the drives. Then power it up and see if it checks out.

    Also, get new cables, and try those. Even if the ones you have “seem to work” try one’s you KNOW work. Always a good rule.

    (I know it’s entirely possible to have “green light syndrome” with hard drives in RAIDS…just because the light is on “green” doesn’t mean it’s “connected properly” … remember that, because a lot of people suffer from it…..) — Point in Case: I know of a similar issue in more then one occurrence that happen to be a Back-plane / Chassis / Manufacturing situation where the drives were not seating properly in the units even though the lights were on and appeared to be working. (It’s also possible to note that some raid chassis, need different drive trays as they are not all interchangeable as it may seem either.)

    And like Bob indicated…

    Swing over to the ATTO Forums and the AIC Forums and poke around in the public specific to the products…see if you can search their website knowledge bases etc, to find similar issues. It might set you on a path of more help.

    I’m sure others are here to help as much as is possible out here where they can / are allowed, etc…

    Again, just my $0.02.
    Good luck …

    Simon,

    Don’t forget, 10GB for Mac has been around for a very long time.

    It’s only been since the introduction of 10.5 / 10.6 and Small Tree’s FCoE Development for Mac OSX that is driving a lot of connectivity now.

    As the performance improved in AFP, it because viable to move larger data sets on the network / not so much for video editing although 10Gb has been being used for that as well …. (for example if you had multi clip, or the need to edit more then just a couple of video streams per client at the same time..)

    As the introduction of 10Gb hardware comes out on Motherboards, the prices will start to drop making it a viable installation for most…

    Also with convergence happening, people will need to take the backbones and revamp them with thing like 10Gb where they have Gigabit and so forth!

    Just my $0.02

    Matt

    Small Tree offers a SIX Port 10Gb Card today ….

    Small Tree will be introducing a 4 Port version soon!

    SOLUTION No3:
    Mac Server with Caldigit HDPro2 (or the old X-Raid) and Smalltree 6 port card – link aggregate to a managed switch, to where the workstations connect. I guess this is the simplest, but also slowest solution? Would MetaLan Server do anything for speed in comparison to regular AFP connection?

    Hi Morten,

    I noticed you referred to a Small Tree card with a lot of hardware that Small Tree network adapters work just fine with.

    The reason you’ll find that this suggestion is the slowest, isn’t because of the Small Tree network card;

    (Noticed… I said the network will work okay.)

    I don’t know enough from your post about how you intend to use this configuration, or any configuration you choose for the long term.

    I do know Ethernet will serve your Real Time editing needs just fine, however, using Apple’s OS. I also know you need very FAST configurations from your Server, Workstation Clients, as well as your Storage.

    I do know that you won’t need MetaLAN if you are just using Final Cut to edit at the same time with on your Mac’s.

    But please expect to spend about 7-11K to make this work correctly for your basic Real Time editing needs using Mac OSX and Small Tree networking adapters.

    Also please test your Storage all the way to ensure you’re not going to drop frames when you begin Sharing it with the two Mac’s and then start using both of them to edit with.

    Please feel free to reply back to us all for further advice.

    Bob Z is very good to give you advice on these details.

    If you’d like to talk more about Small Tree Real Time editing you can certainly check out our Cow Forum: https://forums.creativecow.net/smalltree

    Be careful to check your hardware you choose to run this when you begin Sharing it and using Final Cut from 2 Mac’s at the same time

    …. the Small Tree network adapter should be the last worry.

    Good luck!

    Hey Nick,

    Have you looked into EMC’s Retrospect?

    https://www.retrospect.com/products/software/retroformac/

    According to a PR I read from January 09 (https://www.retrospect.com/press/news/?id=310) this is in your price range when it was announced by EMC……

    Retrospect 8.0 for Mac will ship during the first quarter of 2009 in three English language editions, (all prices listed are U.S. suggested retail pricing):

    Retrospect 8.0 Desktop 3-User, $129 new, $59 upgrade from Desktop edition

    Protects a single, non-server Mac and up to two additional networked Mac, Linux, or Windows desktops and laptops; additional desktop/laptop client licenses and support and maintenance will be available separately;

    Retrospect 8.0 Single Server, $809 new, $539 upgrade from Workgroup edition

    Protects a single Mac OS X Server and an unlimited number of networked Mac, Linux, and Windows desktops and laptops; includes 1 year support and maintenance; additional server client licenses will be available separately;

    Retrospect 8.0 Multi Server, $1,669 new, $939 upgrade from Server edition

    This is the one I hear good things about from others that use it.

    Good luck!

    March 11, 2010 at 4:40 pm in reply to: Multiclip problems

    Dylan,

    What I do know is that doing Multi-Clip, is a lot more strict on hardware then say, no Multi-Clip editing.

    With regard to editing “local” or across the “network” — these are two common methods for editors to have “local attached disks at your Mac” or “network attached disk that go over Ethernet or Fibre Channel or some other wires”

    Hopefully that helps. Don’t feel ignorant about networking, you’re an editor. 🙂

    BTW — How did you resolve your problem?

    March 11, 2010 at 1:08 am in reply to: Multiclip problems

    Hi Dylan,

    I’m not an expert with Multi Clip (yet) but I’m just going to ask some basic questions to clear up any of the initial questions that come to mind;

    Have you been doing this / done this before with this rig you have?

    What kind of video formats are you using?

    Are you editing local or over network?

    Let us all know!

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Hi Kevin,

    What you want to do can be done with an OSX Environment with the use of some Small Tree equipment.

    You may want to check out the Small Tree forum or give them a call and discuss available options and pricing for your situation.

    Hey John and Chris,

    The answers are close in reach here. What’s interesting about both of your posts is that I’d like to point you to a place that makes this all possible with OSX environments.

    Check these guys out…

    February 20, 2010 at 12:54 am in reply to: Photo sharing and logging, FCP-style on a SAN

    Eric,

    Have you considered putting in a 10Gb Ethernet (High Bandwidth / Non Editing) network to do the transfer and logging of all those videos?

    What are we talking 50GB-100GB + of files?

    At anyrate it could all be set up with Ethernet no doubt — –

    In the future these things are perhaps a good candidate to consider something like FCoE when it comes out… Fiber Channel over Ethernet.

    It will run on 10Gb Copper or Optical Ethernet wire…

    What do you think about that idea?
