No drives showing in ATTO Configuration Tool
Posted by Jacob Altman on May 18, 2010 at 3:10 amHi there,
In the process of setting op our new shared storage system (something I have done several times before but with different hardware). We are using the AIC XJ1100 16Bay 3U chassis, linked via miniSAS into the ATTO R380, which is in a new Mac Pro with 16GB RAM. Running latest Snow Leopard and Hitachi 1TB Enterprise drives in the chassis.
All ATTO drivers and firmware installed, as well as the ATTO config tool, all cables tested and checked, all drives powering fine, all LEDs lighting ok, yet NO drives listed in ATTO config tool and so I can’;t even get started on building the RAID!
Very frustrating, probably silly and simple, any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe a silly sugestion sorry. -

May 19, 2010 at 2:05 ameither you have a bad SAS /SATA cable, or your backplane is defective on the AIC chassis. Have you called AIC yet ?

May 19, 2010 at 3:12 amHey Jacob…and all,
Of course my “two cents” — “from my consultative viewpoint.”
I’m sorry you’re having these problems.
As simple as it may seem, you might try to power it all down, re-seat all the drives. Then power it up and see if it checks out.
Also, get new cables, and try those. Even if the ones you have “seem to work” try one’s you KNOW work. Always a good rule.
(I know it’s entirely possible to have “green light syndrome” with hard drives in RAIDS…just because the light is on “green” doesn’t mean it’s “connected properly” … remember that, because a lot of people suffer from it…..) — Point in Case: I know of a similar issue in more then one occurrence that happen to be a Back-plane / Chassis / Manufacturing situation where the drives were not seating properly in the units even though the lights were on and appeared to be working. (It’s also possible to note that some raid chassis, need different drive trays as they are not all interchangeable as it may seem either.)
And like Bob indicated…
Swing over to the ATTO Forums and the AIC Forums and poke around in the public specific to the products…see if you can search their website knowledge bases etc, to find similar issues. It might set you on a path of more help.
I’m sure others are here to help as much as is possible out here where they can / are allowed, etc…
Again, just my $0.02.
Good luck …Matt G

We use a similar set up at MAXX DIGITAL for our Raids and it could me a number things such as cable , drives not connected(seated) but one thing is in the ATTO config tool there is a command called auto map and this refreshes the identity of the Raid. How many ports are there on the back of the AIC chassis? Have you tried all of these? Was the Raid created on the same card you are using now? ATTO is pretty good with support so try them as well. With no sales pitch intended but this is why we sell complete solutions and not parts. I hope that some of my email helps.

August 12, 2010 at 3:04 amHey Bob and others,
Forgive the ridiculously tardy response, it’s been a manic few months.
In the end it was a faulty ATTO R380 card. After putting up with the Australian Distributor (who shall remain unnamed) basically laughing down the phone at me, telling me those cards are NEVER faulty and that’s why they sell turnkey systems etc. He then sent us their demo card and lo and behold all the drives popped up immediately. He wasn’t so cocky after that!
Thanks for all your help, I realise i got very unlucky on that job, but it is now a KILLER system:
-AIC 16 bay chassis
-16x 1TB Hitachi Enterprise drives
-Edgecore switch
-ATTO R380
-Top end Mac Pro server with 16GB RAM
-Cat6 cabling throughout
-CatDV Enterprise Server
-All beautifully configured. That’s how we roll!
Thanks again to everyone for all your suggestions.
Agree with Bob that people wanting to do HDCAM over ethernet for less than 2k is beyond ludicrous, but if you’ve got a bit of cash (ie less than 20k all up) and are switched on and ready to learn (and it does take time) you CAN do this yourself. Exciting times!Jacob.
