Gary, I actually am looking at this on a 37″ LCD as well as FCP viewer & canvas. All the same. I’m not working with interlaced footage. Sequence settings image below. I have an SD sequence with TV spots edited in it that are being used for a case study along with footage we shot. I wanted to stay progressive, as this is not for broadcast. DVD and web only. Footage being used is 720p30PN that I downconvert to SD ProRes 29.97, no problem here. The footage in quesiton I want to use is older footage which is 720p24PN, which I convert to 29.97, previous post above. Converted 24p to 29.97 ProRes worked best with frame controls off rather than on.
Am I making sense?

Jeremy, this is what I’m talking about. Picture 1 is 24p converted to 29.97 with Frame Controls on and Picture 2 is with frame controls off. PIcture 2 is much nicer. Clean frame after clean frame with no interpolated frames, if thats the right terminology. Does this make sense? And is this the correct process?

WOW, that was quick. Thanks. Do you have any insight on that set up? Below are my findings.
I’ve been testing this all afternoon and actually just got pretty good results. I used ProRes, set the frame rate to 29.97 and left the frame controls off. Yeah, thats right. For some reason, with the frame controls on and using Best or Better for each, I was getting this wicked motion blur between frames. Such as hand movement. clean frame, blurry ghosted frame, clean frame. But with the frame controls off, it was clean frame after clean frame. Weird huh. The new 29.97 clip looked very close to the original 24p clip.

How about going the other way? I have 24pn footage from the HVX 200 and what to use it with 30pn footage. I’ve had to downconvert the 30pn footage to SD using ProRes and keeping it progessive, which works nice. But what are the best steps for converting the 24pn footage? I’ve tried various compressor tests and get mixed results. A lot of motion blurring and steppy looking footage. Any ideas?

I’ve actually been wondering the same thing. I have one project all shot with the HVX 200 at 720p24PN and another project shot at 720p30PN. While working on a 3rd project I realized I could use some of the extra footage from both projects in the new one. That project is 30 PN. I’ve used the Compressor method to convert my 24p footage to 30 fps and it looks ok but there’s some bad sections with a lot of motion and motion blur. I’ve heard After Effects can add in pulldown to properly convert 24p to 30p or 29.97 but I don’t have it.
Is there another way to do this in FCS 2?

Alan, I’ve tried setting up my system the way you described but only 1/2 is working. RCA audio out from DVD player is going into the Tape input, female XLR A&B from main outs on back of 1202 to IO. Male XLR A&B from IO plugged back into Lines 1 & 2 of the mixer. Metal main output level button depressed on back. I can hear the audio and see the video with the Log and Capture window but once I capture there is video with only loud, feedback like humming audio. What am I missing in order to get the audio captured correctly?

Hey thanks man. Appreciate it. I’ll run some test. As you said, mpeg streamclip is excellent but I’ve had to resort to other measures in essence of time. I do have a cluster set up in compressor and wow does that speed things up. Unfortunately its just to time consuming. being at a fast paced ad agency we just don’t have the time to do it the right, or maybe better way. So i just sacrifice quality by capturing on the fly. quality is not a issue for us since the work is just for comps. Thanks again for your comments. I’ll see what I can whip up.

Thanks Alan. I’ll try this.
I capture clips from movies to be used as mood videos and spec work to show clients what spots could look like. Which brings me to another question. Most movies are 24p. I know a consumer DVD player introduces pull down to play at 29.97. But the IO la can capture 24p or 23.98. Is this just a matter of selecting the 23.98 easy set up or is there a setting on the DVD player for this. I know once I select the progressive scan button on the DVD player things go weird. Other than using MPEG streamclip, which is a pain, can you capture 24p from a consumer DVD player?
