@Dave LaRonde
I work at a post house with 5 seats (3 FCP 2 Smoke). Most suites have a Beta Deck or a Digibeta deck. Mine happens to have both. We do our fair share of delivery to cable and network affiliates. Today I was in edit sessions all day and yesterday I was in sessions for half the day. I did not have to turn on my decks once. In fact, I’d hardly use my decks at all anymore if it weren’t for the fact that our facility master’s everything to digibeta for back up purposes, I would rarely have to turn my decks on at all. Most of our clients have moved to tapeless shooting formats.
Most of the time while I’m editing I don’t need all of the functions my edit suite is capable of. Certain things simply go unused for weeks…sometimes months at a time.
I think that’s part of Kenny’s larger point.

[Gary Pollard] “That’s why I save my docs in RTF format in case I decide to wave goodbye to Office. (I held on to Word Perfect a long time before throwing in the towel).”
I wasn’t as smart as you and now I have lots of unusable old documents in Appleworks format.

or select the section you want to export and compound clip it.

[David Roth Weiss] “[Scott Sheriff] “Unfortunately apple, in their infinite wisdom does not have a 30 day trial for X. So that means you can either rely on the opinion of others, or shell out 300 bucks to see if you like it…
…The opinion of long time FCP advocates is invaluable since apple chooses to operate in a cloak and dagger fashion, rather keep users in the loop.””
I don’t recall any of Apple’s pro apps ever having a 30 day trial, which does suck. Maybe they did for shake for a bit I can’t remember. 300 bucks won’t break the bank either way…but if you don’t want to buy it…you don’t have to…it won’t hurt their bottom line much.

[David Roth Weiss] “For the record, I do consulting work with clients all over the globe at times, and I even have a couple who already are using FCP X on my recommendation. These are mostly indies with no formal knowledge or training however, and they are purely web only. Indeed, there are people who absolutely do rely on my “musings” to direct their purchases.”
Funny, I was going to put a disclaimer about deferring their opinion to someone else with more experience, but I left it out.
No one ever doubted the use of your musings.

[Scott Sheriff] “I would consider what they have to say on this a bit more than just musings.”
Very true, but also the only one to really have the ability to determine weather or not a tool is right for a certain person’s use is that person himself/herself. Those guys for the most part have said that it won’t fit their workflow…that doesn’t mean it won’t fit another person’s workflow.

[Herb Sevush] “Your whole Apple-centric post misses the point -“
I think Craig’s point is that if you’re going to switch, you might as well think about a full platform switch as well. Apple is effectively killing quicktime as a format (for AV Foundation). Adobe and Avid if they decide to continue releasing their software on Mac will eventually have to shift to AV Foundation as well.

I agree with everything you are saying…it just sucks having to try and figure out the method you are suppose to use for certain things.
Bad editing habits are hard to break, and the last thing I want to do is try and drive this thing like it’s FCP 7. I want to know how things are suppose to function…not the best way to work around getting something to work like something else use to.
Re; your a developer showing you an interface with no instructions… that’s totally different. You were told you were beta testing. Apple didn’t do that. They said…this is the product.

[Craig Seeman] “This is the time to learn the language even though they’re still working on the dictionary and the grammar.”
Sure would have been nice if apple had given us at least a pocket translation handbook instead of relying on us to help write the dictionary. Translating is hard.

Jeremy’s such a fanboy….He’s singing praises to software he’s never even used.
