  • Hi Paul,

tried that today but I got the same results.

    Best regards,

  • Maybe. Hardware is an i7 iMac 2.7 ghz from 2010 quad core, 8GB RAM.

Yes, it’s if I put the multicam viewer on that I see the frames dropping. As one camera was shooting out of the hand and moving a lot, it’s difficult making editing decisions on the fly when you see that camera choppy (the rest is less of a problem because they are more static shots).
It makes cutting on the fly, which is the whole point of multicam, rather difficult in this case – if not impossible.

But in the multicam viewer in FCP 7 they all play very smoothly.

I noticed the same once with performance on a i5 recent MBP 13″ (previous generation) but not in multicam. Just cutting 3D XDCAM clips (well, actually, normal 1080i clips, but with a side by side image).
Performance was much choppier in FCP X then FCP 7.

As MXF is the native format of many XDCAM formats, I can only hope that the promised MXF support that’s coming will also include better XDCAM performance.

  • I’m doing very much An Apples to apples comparison:

Same footage, better performance is used in FCPX, dynamic RT in FCP7.
Don’t get me wrong: both play, but performance is much worse and choppier in fcpx.
In FCP 7 it Keeps playing smooth.
And it’s the second time that I did a comparison (different projects) and in both cases I came to the Same results.

    No one noticing the same?

Luckily I only use aliases, so I can have my own subfolder-structure.
To be honest, I think it’s nuts that when you import into a FCP X Event, it all goes into one giant folder.
Must be a mess if you work with a lot of media.

Your problem still is significant. Have you sent feedback to Apple about this?

Maybe Colorista from Magic Bullet is something for you?

Unfortunately it’s only available for all other NLE’s EXCEPT FCP X for the moment. I do hope Red Giant is busy with an update though, they have made most of their plugins available for FCP X.

Also, don’t forget that Resolve 9 is coming out soon, which simplifies some set-up operations, has some new UI, and 64bit support.

And as someone that came from Color, and had the same overwhelmed feeling as you had by opening Resolve, I highly recommend the DaVinci Resolve training on Ripple Training. It’s very inexpensive (80 dollars), but is very throughout and detailed.
It’s easy to understand if you come from Color and already know some basic things about color correction.

  • Hi Alban,

as a FCP7 and FCP X user, just curious: which button are you referring to?
Is it in the Retime tools?

    Thanks,

    Hey Craig,

you said Apple answered more direct questions at that Black Magic show.
Could you offer an insight to what was asked and what the answers were?

Very curious to see the presentations of Apple (or hear about it, I don’t live in the US) and I hope they show some of their future features (how they enabled R3D support for instance) and are being straight up to where it’s going with FCP X and at least give some information on what’s coming.

They have been a lot more forthcoming with FCP X then in general or in their history, and I think they realized they just HAD to. I’m happy they are, and I expect more of it in the future.

I know I mailed Tim Cook once about the future of FCP X. If they would focus on the prosumers or if they were really taking in the feedback of professionals to make it better.
I got a response from someone of the FCP X team a day or so later, that they were absolutely committed to the professional in making FCP X better.

Pages 6 and 7 go on about how Apple did very active efforts to make the software side of it work, and the filtering of the GPU. Half of it is incomprehensible for me (I’m a filmmaker, not a complete techie although it interests me), so for everyone that says that Apple only is looking out for consumers these days, just read these pages and what they have done.
They made their utmost software R&D to not only bragg about a high-resolution display, but let it work very smart in their OS and their software packages. (and if you read about the 1080p viewer in FCP X and the way it works in Aperture, it’s clear that they are not forgetting the professional)

Maybe you can open it in a separate timeline like you do with a compound clip, and do it there?
(Not sure, I haven’t tested this)

  • Thanks for the reply, Ronald.

Strange. You three boards are at my opinion all good, and all have your down and upsides.

But thanks for the explanation, though.
