I know this won’t help after the fact, but….
We’ve been working on defining workflows that cut down on errors such as this. As such, when a “producer” creates a log, it is passed on to our Media Tech, who publishes the catalog who sends an email to the producer, who in turn checks the published catalog and adds his name to the “Catalog Details” to validate that it is correct.
This sounds a lot more involved than it really is and only takes a quick moment, but insures that the catalog is in place. As an additional redundancy, the catalog is also stored with the raw media and follows it all the way from near-line usage to off-line storage.
This is assuming, of course, that you are using a server product.

It appears from your error message that you are trying to log into a file.
I assume that you wish to create the file “TEST11.MOV”. You won’t be able to upload a file there. You need to specify a folder to upload too.
Use a FTP Client and see what your root file path is when you log in. This will be where you begin your upload folder description (folder hierarchy).

The other thing that I’m thinking in reading though these responses (and looking back at the original post) is the realization that you don’t have to publish EVERY catalog to the database. More and more, we do our queries and collect individual media in “project” catalog. All of the media that is in this “project” catalog exist in the database, it’s just consolidated into one catalog in order for us to generate a FCP XML file to import into the project. While we usually save this “project” catalog (as a file with the archived FCP project), we don’t usually publish it to the CatDV database, as it relates only the project that we’re currently working on.
As has been mentioned, don’t get hung up on the catalogs. Obsess with getting ALL of you media entered into the database (of course using catalogs), then use new catalogs as tools to create individual projects (i.e. offline edit) independent of the database. While I suppose you could publish them, our feeling is that it would render erroneous queries and become confusing quickly. Hope this makes sense.

Umm, don’t think there an option in CatDV for that, which is to say…
CatDV uses Quicktime to playback media. The Calibrated Software codecs give Quicktime the ability to playback your P2 files, ergo, CatDV has that ability.
Perhaps I am not understanding what you are asking?

Not entirely certain about your question regarding Live Capture. It IS primarily for for tape, though I suppose you could use it as a “digital capture device”. I’m supposing that’s what you are talking about… running a firewire to the Adobe product and recording directly from your camera to hard drive. If this is the case, I don’t think you’ll need the Live Capture product. You are already there.
It’s reassuring to see someone who realizes the importance of thinking digital management through before they start their project. It sounds like you are on the right road, those folks are lucky to have someone as forward thinking as yourself on this project! Good luck.

Are you using one of the server products?
We do and we create catalogs based on acquisition, which is to say, every day we go out shooting the footage is logged into a separate catalog. Same with out of house media as it enters the door.
When we are ready to put together a project, we select clips from these individual catalogs and make a “working” catalog which has the media from all of these catalogs. We usually save the project catalog with the archived project (not in our database, though we probably could).
Naming practices and consistent folder structure becomes crucial in working with this method, at the media tends to scatter quickly across the system otherwise.

Not sure about your license conundrum, but Live Capture will deal with those tapes nicely. Not sure if Adobe captures the metadata from the tape, but Live Capture will acquire time/date info (and such) which will give you many more opportunities to come up with a logical organization structure. I’ve personally used it to capture hundreds of hours of very dry technical video. Highly effective.
You ask, “I am asking for advice on planning this out”. The first step in this is going to be very clearly defining what types of media you will be dealing with (formats and content). From this, you should develop a “Best Practices” document of some sort to define how you will store the information on your media (media names and folders structure). You don’t necessarily need the software to work on this, just thought and a word processor. Once you develop this, you will test it by storing some media, analyze the results and then you begin the proverbial “rinse, lather and repeat” process of ingesting media. Keep in mind that this is a dynamic process and will surely need minor adjustments as you continue. There will always be odd media in the mix, but the goal of “Best Practices” is to come up with a system that deals with MOST of the media that you will be archiving.
Obviously, no single task is that complex, but when you add all of the mundane together, it becomes a bit daunting. These are odd times in that we (in the video world) generally don’t have much experience with data systems and those in the data world don’t have that much experience with media. You have found the right place though, though in it’s infancy, this forum should prove to be beneficial if you will come back and post more specific questions as you continue your journey.
If you’re just getting the client software (not the server) then the price is pretty reasonable. No, I am not affiliated with any of the vendors, but I’ve been using this product for years now. It will do what you need it too. Good luck.
