Understand what you are saying and I mostly agree. But that brings up the question of how long to wait?
I too, am completely miffed by the total lack of communications from the company on the matter. I only wonder what they might come out and say in the next week or two that would restore an inking of hope that they are not completely abandoning the pro market for iProducts?
Budgeting for next year is still a few months off, but it’s going to become increasingly difficult to justify continued expenditures on Mac products. I work in a shop that is mostly PC’s and had to sing and dance mightily to get FCP in the door. Now I’m wondering if I’ve just been torpedo’d by the tools I love.
A disturbing day at best.

No, they didn’t hold a gun to my head. Apparently, I was naive in making an assumption that a program named “Final Cut” would open “Final Cut” projects. That being said, I am happy that they stepped up and refunded on a product that was a tad mis-represented.

Appreciate the response. My problem presently is the never ending parade of equipment vendors who will begin a very loud rant about what a debacle this release is and how our company needs to transition out of FCS3 as quickly as possible. I have a substantial amount of DPS Velocity projects that are completely dead and as such has costed us many production hours for re-editing. I fear the same for the FCS3 projects we are working on today. After 20+ years of doing this professionally, it seems the equipment vendors have landed on the model of perpetual change for the sake of new sales. I guess I’m more than a bit stung by the fact that this release gives my credibility a swift kick in the privates. After many months of saying, “Wait till the next version comes out, it’s going to be 64-bit and make our 12 core machines fly” I now have much egg on my face as we really can’t use this “great” new software and I really don’t see a timeline of when we will be able too.
We will, of course, continue working. The world has certainly not ended, but it is only a matter of time before FCS3 is completely broken and we will have to choose between remaining in legacy world or keeping up with technology. Trust me when I tell you that our company has MANY legacy systems in place and while they work, I think ultimately they cost us a great deal more to use in time and troubleshooting (which is a nightmare!). Sadly, that is the future I see for FCS3.
It certainly feels like we’re at a crossroads today. I haven’t started researching alternative roads, but it’s the first time in a few years that I have seriously contemplated it. Of course, we’ll “wait and see” for a bit, but that can only be for so long. Maybe in a year or two this will once again be the dominate program in the market, but I also know that Avid’s and Premiere’s will not sit still either. It’s coming down to which company is more likely to support you as you move forward and, sadly, Apple seems to be saying they are not interested in those of us who have spend years and money working with them. Really, I’m not upset that they are changing so radically, I’m upset because they really aren’t giving us ANY feedback on the concerns raised. Surely, they must have anticipated such reactions. Their lack of pre-emptive response for this leaves me wondering one of two things;
1. They REALLY didn’t think it would be that much of a problem. Very scary, if they are really that naive.
2. They REALLY don’t care. Even scarier as they seem so uninterested in a loyal customer base.
I am racking my brain trying to think of third possibility, but I can’t come up with it. Sad really, the rest of the folks at the company I work at use PC’s (religiously). You are right about one thing…. all I have at this point is denial, this week didn’t happen. What new release? I’m just having a supply problem with new copies of FCS3, that’s all.

You should really consider making an investment in a great tripod. Camera’s will come and go, but a really well built tripod will last for many, many years. The company we work at still have some tripods that were purchased over a decade ago that still work great. Sadly, today’s camera’s are much smaller and lighter, so we had to purchase some smaller, quality pods (Vinten). That being said, the old one’s are still used (teleprompter setups) and will be around for a long time. We also tend to think that the form factors of camera’s have stabilized. We don’t think they’re going to get that much smaller, so it’s a good time to be making another investment in something like a tripod. We can reasonably expect to use it at least 10 years. Cost out that expensive tripod over that time and it won’t seem like such a hit. Cost out that cheap one over the same time period. I promise, if you go cheap there, you WILL buy it again within 3 years. Then you’ll be back where you are today, having to make the same decision. Worse yet, cheap gear is going to let yo down at the WORST time… during production.
I’ve spent so much money over the years on camera’s and tried to scrimp on grip and light. Many years ago, we decided to bit the bullet and make investments in equipment with much lower obsolescent factor, like grip, light, audio and camera support. In the long run we found that, while you CAN save a few bucks on support gear (low budget stuff, DIY hardware stuff, etc.) , in the long run you will buy it again and again.
Turns out, cheap is more expensive in the long haul.

Gray Card App
When I first got it, I thought it was a bit of a novelty, but after having it and using it over the last year, I must say it’s pretty cool. Takes a bit of getting used to, it doesn’t work exactly like warming cards, but you can quickly and easily “trick” the camera into shifting color balance. Also great for matching two cameras.

Thanks for the tip Bryson, always worth mentioning.
We were able to correct the problem by going to the “Advanced Media Handling” preferences pane and checking the box for “Don’t use cached time values”. Not sure why it worked, but it did.
For those running Enterprise Server, make sure and change your broadcast user preferences settings.

Not such a huge deal actually. You can copy your preference files to move those user fields from one deployment of the client software to another. You might need to re-license it once the preference file is copied, but the setup is transportable in that manner.
We used to do this for 6 machines when we were using the Workgroup Server. A little clunky, but doable.
