What they said was they are going too (at some unspecified time) add XML EXPORT. Read it again and tell me where it says XML import? Look around friend, FCPX is a consumer product aimed at a future where, in all likelihood, more and more consumers will be participating in this video industry. That’s all well and good, the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned. But the fact is, this product will probably never again be a “professional” product.
The world didn’t change when this release happened, but this is certainly writing on the wall. Please understand one thing VERY clearly, the function that most people define this product as “professional” is the proliferation of deployment by the industry. It will never see the market share that it had on June 20th again. What it MAY see is a larger market share of a NEW market, prosumers who find new and interesting ways to use video to make a buck. I say more power too them, open up some doors for us crusty old curmudgeon’s, that always been welcomed. But it’s going to be another generation before big business ever has a modicum of trust in Apple for mission critical operations.

“People keep stating this as a fact, but the justification for it grows thinner by the day.”
That sir, is incorrect. The only thing that grows thinner everyday is the number of people waiting around to see what happens next. You mistake the fact that the new market that Apple is attracting is going to keep this product viable for an industry.
There are a few, like myself, who will have a wait and see attitude, but a clear majority have already moved on. No matter how great the product might be in a year, the direction has already changed for a large number of people in government, educational and professional businesses. Winning them back is going to be very difficult. This move is going to have a real cost in time and money for many, many institutions. That hardship will not be forgotten in 2 years.
That being said, I really hope this thing does evolve into the “next big thing”, but really the possibility of that is what actually “grows thinner by the day”.

Yeah, I remember 1999 as well. I was a closet FCP editor in those years. I got a LOT more jobs by putting “Avid” on my marketing materials. It was a long while before FCP was a professional credential. The youngsters weren’t around to know. Deja vu, all over again!

God love the “indie masses”. Honestly, some of my favorite people in the world are indies.
Some of us have to make a living with this stuff though, and one thing you are right about is that it is NOT for us. One tip…. I wouldn’t suggest adding FCPX Editor to your signature anytime soon. It won’t be getting you any jobs. FCPX may become a closet dalliance for some professionals, but it will be a LONG time before it ever regains the status of “credential”.

Highly unlikely it will become the “next major conceptual change in the Post industry” if the only people using it are pompous executives cutting their vacation video’s with it. You REALLY need to have a professional user base to have any impact on an industry. Will it flesh out to be decent editing software? Maybe, we’ll see. The bigger question is will anyone actually use it if it is functional? I don’t think the resentment over this fiasco is going to be quick as short lived as some believe, given the upending this company has just handed to an entire group of people who have chosen this as the primary tool to build there businesses and careers around, it is more likely that even a viable FCPX will not be the go-to tool for those who’ve moved on. Remember, once bitten, twice shy.
Perhaps it was necessary to do a “day one” re-write of the code. No one will argue that fact, but to handle the release in such a ham-fisted manner seems to be what most have a larger problem with. The fact that many have gone from “Cool, FCPX is coming out this week!” to “Oh sh*t, how am I going to explain this to my employer?” in the course of a few hours makes this release one that will be remembered for a LONG time.
They were right about one thing…. it IS jaw dropping for professional editors.

Doesn’t seem totally “moral, ethical or legal” what Apple has done to the professional editing community. Maybe I’m trying to “rationalize” a solution for getting by the next few months. I guess by “swapping” I mean a kind of scenario where I’ve got a serial, you’ve got a serial, we both need a few more seats to get through the next month or so, and we trade numbers to get a couple of working seats. We certainly don’t like this kind of solution, nor frankly advocate it, but I’m scratching my head trying to come up with another solution for these challenging days that are going to be the next month or two.
I realize the correct moral, ethical and legal thing to do would be simply migrate on to a different solution, but making that happen expediently is a bit of a chore. This whole thing has caught us in mid-transition with no real path forward. Can I see a solution for the next year? Sure. Can in happen in the next 30 days, maybe. Is work still coming in the door? Absolutely. It’s like the scene from the Python movie where the “efficiency” expert moves one small item at the blacksmith shop and the whole operation falls apart. Well, perhaps not that extreme, but still it is a plan that was substantially interrupted and I’m trying to stick to the plan, short term, until we create another plan to move forward.

Perhaps not the best petition in the world, but it sends the message of discontent. I signed it, and will sign any other petition out there that let’s Apple know this is a colossal blunder. I realize that there is little we can do about any of this. If it took them 2 years to roll out this fetid pile of software, it’s going to take at least that much longer to come up with something that might even be remotely viable as a replacement. After 20+ years of making a living off of this platform I still hold out a shred of hope that we might continue using Apple products. It is still a viable Unix box and I would still prefer dealing with Apple service. That being said, I am certainly looking at PC alternatives today. Problem is, they are just as depressing as Apple’s current state of disregard for professional users. Perhaps one day I will succumb to the dumbed down, cloud based, prosumer, iPad approach to doing television work, but it’s not going to be without voicing my discontent.
After all this time working in this business, I really, really, really think the suggestion of this current approach only benefits the manufacturer, NOT the user. Nice koolaid, if you can force the masses to drink it.
Bring me petitions, I will sign them. All of them.
