What I’ve been wondering is the implications of AV Foundation in the bigger picture. I wonder how AV Foundation will be supported in the PC world? I can remember not too many years ago when quicktime was very difficult to deploy to the broader market due to integration problems with PC’s. As there are so many iGadgets that are tied to PC’s, I wonder what Apple’s solution is for that? Lion’s release this month should be quite telling. I truly hope they don’t decide to EOL QT support for the bigger world of PC.
Aside from that, I think a pretty fair segment of the “professional” market will be migrating from the Apple platform altogether after this FCP(su)X release. At least, a fair segment of the folks I’ve talked too and read post from.

Actually, it makes me feel a bit better when I hear you guys say that. Frankly, after this week I was starting to wonder just who was going to be using these Mac Pro’s in a year. Very, very happy to hear there will be some still wanting this kind of computer. After seeing this release I was trying to imagine what Apple saw as the future. I kept envisioning an iMac clustered to a closet full of mac mini’s as the future of “multi-core” processing.

Look, I’m sure you’re going to rent a crap load of indie packages to all the new folks who’ll be buying FCPX. More power to you, really. I am honestly happy that you have positioned yourself in such a way to benefit from all this. But I hope you understand how callous your cheerleading is sounding to those “few” people that this affects. Does FCP7 still work, sure. We’ll keep using it for a few days and keep a copy around for a long while to come. I’m not nearly as savagely affected by this as several folks I’ve spoken with directly, and read comments from this week. I hope it all works out and FCPX turns into something great. I really do. But I’m not going to go around telling everyone that those who are devastated by this are just whiners, cause FCP7 still works and they should just wait until things get better. The impact is real and immediate for too many good people.
What I’m trying to tell you is that your (and Apple’s) smug indifference to the people that made FCP7 a success is not doing anyone any favors. Basically, they slammed the doors to the bulkheads of the passenger ship before telling anyone the ship was going to sink. It was ethically wrong and frankly unnecessary. You are waving your pom-poms over the corpses of your ancestors. It’s not very becoming. That’s all.

Hey Chris, what is it you have to say to the educator who now has to change an entire curriculum in a month for fall semester? Or the facilities manager in mid-tranistion to FCP products? Or the consultant for large scale FCP facility implementation who is a day is having to find another job?
I guess you’re message is… “It’ll be great one day, don’t know when, but just hang in there!” That’s not going to pay the bills.
In the meantime, all these long time supporters are now scrambling, trying to figure how they are going to make a living in a very tough world. Guess they just need to get out of the way of the new folks who’ll be using this “amazing” product, eh? This little culture that has been created with these Apple products just gave the boot to the people that got them where they are. It’s about more than features, buddy.

Look around, there are several post on this. Especially from the educational market that uses this particular feature to distribute curriculum. It’s a HUGE problem.

Face it, this is an experiment conducted by Apple. They want to see if someone else (third party vendors) can absorb the cost of development and support for the majority of the “pro” features for FCPX. I am pretty sure that’s why they are remaining so tight lipped about all of this. They simply don’t know what’s going to happen. The bottom line is, in order for 3rd party vendors to embrace this plan, there must be a lucrative user base to buy it. Apple knew they would alienate a vast segment of professional community with this abrupt change. In the coming months, they will “define” exactly what FCPX is going to be based on who ends up buying and using it. Key to this is “using it”. It is certain that the price point puts it within reach of an entirely new segment of the market, but the question remains how many of those that buy it now will actually use it 6 months later. I don’t care how nice the GUI is, or how cheap it is, editing will always take time. As optimized as the software will ever be, it will still take time, focused concentration and an innate aesthetic to edit quality video. When this realization sets in for those newcomers who have purchased this now affordable product, just as many will realize this is not for them.
The more I read about this, the more I think Apple really doesn’t know what is going to happen next. Sure, in 6 months time, they will analyze all of the fallout from their actions and announce boldly, “That’s what we planned all along, isn’t it awesome?”, but that’s just marketing. It remains to be seen whether this is a going to be a textbook case for success or failure. Either way, this product simply doesn’t know what it’s going to be, and that makes it irresponsible for someone to recommend it for anything at this point. At this point, it’s a shiny new toy that may, or may not hold any interest for anyone who needs a tool to do a job.
