I’ve always said, “It’s not what you point at it, it’s what you point it at that counts”.

We’re using a Sony Petasite (tape), with CatDV to create offline previews of stored media. We’re hoping to soon add a NAS server and ditch those filthy external drives. Not practical for anything but a transitionary solution. It’s not a matter of IF they’ll fail, only WHEN.
At this point, your best bet is to, quickly as possible, establish best practices for file names and folder structures. If you haven’t done so already, start now, today, don’t wait. Delay only creates more work.
A good database program is a must as well. While you might be able to cobble together some kind of XL based way of doing it, you’re better off getting something designed for managing this type of data. Can’t say enough good things about CatDV. Works and plays well with Mac’s, PC’s, FCP, Premiere and many more. Can handle just about any media you throw at it, though it requires 3rd party help for formats like XDCAM, it is still the most bang for your buck out there.
Welcome to file based media. It’s a blessing, and a curse.

While there may not be any moving parts in the camera, we have noticed that the plastic parts seem to be the weakest link. We’ve had a couple of breaks around the handle, the eyepiece and the right side cover. We run 3 camera’s in our shop and they go out a lot.

Thanks for the answers. We would be integrating this into an existing network. Sadly, our current “SAN” is on a common switch and shares traffic with the entire office. We are working on isolating the editing gear to the Small Tree switch, but we will need to access the internet via our existing network.
Bob, I think you answered my question when you said, “If you need normal office and internet access, you will be using a totally seperate ethernet buss (Ethernet Port 1) going to your standard “netgear” or “linksys” switch.” This was, more or less, what I indicated when the question was put to me, but… I am not the “expert” because I am the “video guy”. Thus I had to ask a “silly” question.
BTW, Bob, I love your demeanor!
You sir, are the consummate engineer. It’s like having Don Rickles for your IT consultant. I LOVE that, and mean it most sincerely. (Yes, 22 years of this business will make you a bit strange that way). Thank you, thank you and thank you for your no BS approach to this. It is very refreshing.

You can install Calibrated Codec on a FCP system. Just make sure you get the right one at the web site. This allows you to use quicktime OUTSIDE of the FCP for the MP4 files. If you use this in conjunction with CatDV, you can export an XML list from CatDV and associate your notes from the raw BAPV folder with the MOV’s that you have transferred into FCP. Pretty slick for projects with a lot of footage.

Hate to think of the workflow from BPAV to film for all my raw footage.

You will need Calibrated Software’s codec to see those raw files. They have a demo as well. You will find it at their website.

Only recently discovered that the EX clip browser will “split” folders into 4.7 gig chunks so you can go to regular DVD’s. Handy if you don’t have a lot of footage. Other than that, get ready to pay the ferry man!

I would have to suggest CatDV and Calibrated Software. You can archive the BPAV files directly and generate an XML list from your catalog which can then be connected to your MOV files once they have transferred to FCP.
We retain all of our BPAV folders in a individual root folders with the CatDV catalog inside.
For a single film maker this is a pretty economical approach. Should you migrate on to a work group, there is a server option available with this package.
BTW, I don’t sell either of these packages. Just a long time user who is surprised more people aren’t aware of this product.
