I’m thinking a bit of respect for some of the folks that created an industry that allows you to participate might be in order. If you think Apple, Sony or any other gear manufacturer created this business, you’re wrong. It was a BUNCH of folks working at MANY levels for a VERY long time that created the opportunity for you to “try something new”. Might be wise to listen a bit more than talking when someone who’s done this for a very long time speaks.
Food for thought.

As a facility that re-uses stock footage on a very regular basis, user fed metadata is essential. We’ve been on CatDV for a couple of years and it works well for us. The problem I see with FCPX is that the user-fields for metadata are FAR too restrictive. Great if you want to broadly categorize footage, but horrible if you need any more detail for it. We shoot in 6 markets for hundreds of clients and thousands of job order numbers. I haven’t heard anyone talk about exporting (or importing for that matter) user defined metadata with FCPX. Our current systems (FCP7 and PPro) allow user-defined metadata to be brought into the application via XML import. Wonder if it will be the same case for FCPX?
Sadly, the clock is running out on this disappointment of an application. The more time goes by, the clearer it becomes Apple is in no way interested in servicing the needs of the professional community.

“FCPX is designed to sell Macs.”
Don’t you mean iMacs?
Sorry, couldn’t resist.

“Of course this may not be in the immediate next update but it may mean Apple is taking more time to do more development rather than rushing out small updates of small consequence that will further incense people.”
This might be a good thing if they’re marketing folks were just as conscientious. I think many would be more forgiving of such an explanation for delays if the marketing department would step up a bit and clue the world in on it. Sure, they don’t traditionally do their marketing this way, but they don’t usually blow a product launch so very completely either. Would be nice to see some real innovation in all their departments at this point. Would go a long way to restoring a shred of faith in the ocean of ineptness.

No updates released.
In their FAQ, they said that they would be relying on 3rd party vendors to restore functionality. As of now, they still haven’t released the API’s except to a very few 3rd party vendors due to the fact that it’s “buggy”. If you’ve got to make a move anytime in the near future, I’m afraid it’s going to have to be away from this mess. Good luck.

I certainly understand what you are saying regarding deadlines, but…
What a horrible message this sends to a group of folks that have been their biggest fans. Perhaps they didn’t intend to send such a message, but the perception (for most) is pretty rotten. I had honestly hoped they would have had more damage control than this. Third party developers can’t wait forever for API’s and given the new “App Store” world that we live in, I fear many are going to see this tardiness as simply exclusion and move on.
However great some of the core concepts may be, I fear if no one is left to step up and restore the functionality (as suggested by Apple’s FAQ) then this app may die on the vine.

So….
Let me see if I’ve got this straight. Apple says they’re going to have 3rd party vendors restore the functionality to the program, but they haven’t released the API’s so those folks can fix it because the software is to buggy?
Wow. I keep coming back here hoping to hear all the great progress that’s been made, but now you’re telling me they can’t even release the API’s because the application is still not ready?
Why in the world would they release it like this? AND EOL a functional (though somewhat aged) application? I keep thinking this will make sense one day, but the more time goes on the less sense any of this makes.
I thought it was fatalistic to believe it would take over a year to get this program at least to the point that it was viable as a tool, now I’m wondering if it might not take even longer (or happen at all). Guess I’m the foolish one to think there might be any sort of plan in all of this. The more time passes, the less likely that seems. Unless, of course, the plan was to kill any possibility of this program EVER being taken seriously. Guess this is one way of never having to again carry the burden of being the largest market share of the NLE market. If THAT was the plan… then BRILLIANT!!!!

Perhaps Steve has secretly invested heavily in Adobe and Avid as his final score?
If so, kudos… well played, sir. Not only will you have the funds to buy an entire third world nation, Apple will finally leave you alone to enjoy it! Brilliant.
