Third Party Apps
Posted by Marvin Holdman on August 30, 2011 at 6:56 amSo… thinking it might be time to see how many Third Party Apps are available as of now?
Everyone, what’s out there? And is it available on the App store?

August 30, 2011 at 12:33 pmThere is very little for FCP X, because Apple hasn’t released its SDK for the new version of XML. So far, there’s Automatic Duck ProExportFCP 5.0 and Assisted Editing’s Event Manager. Noise Industries, CHV, CrumblePop and Red Giant have some plug-ins for FCP X and Motion 5. GenArts is in beta with Sapphire Edge for FCP X. A lot of people have posted free effects that function as presets in Motion 5 and therefore FCP X.

For some examples, check the FCPX Techniques forum here at the COW.

August 30, 2011 at 2:50 pmCGM Plugins, motionVFX Plugins, Digital Rebellion Pro Maintenance Tools have plugins out.
Digieffects and BorisFX have promised support. As Oliver points out there’s a lot of wait on API and Stu Maschwitz of RedGiant also mentions bugs that Apple must fix first. -

August 30, 2011 at 10:22 pmSo….
Let me see if I’ve got this straight. Apple says they’re going to have 3rd party vendors restore the functionality to the program, but they haven’t released the API’s so those folks can fix it because the software is to buggy?
Wow. I keep coming back here hoping to hear all the great progress that’s been made, but now you’re telling me they can’t even release the API’s because the application is still not ready?
Why in the world would they release it like this? AND EOL a functional (though somewhat aged) application? I keep thinking this will make sense one day, but the more time goes on the less sense any of this makes.
I thought it was fatalistic to believe it would take over a year to get this program at least to the point that it was viable as a tool, now I’m wondering if it might not take even longer (or happen at all). Guess I’m the foolish one to think there might be any sort of plan in all of this. The more time passes, the less likely that seems. Unless, of course, the plan was to kill any possibility of this program EVER being taken seriously. Guess this is one way of never having to again carry the burden of being the largest market share of the NLE market. If THAT was the plan… then BRILLIANT!!!!

I can speculate but people don’t seem to like that.
They had a hard release date (think about the reasons why that might happen) and decided to release it in its current state. -

August 31, 2011 at 12:02 amI certainly understand what you are saying regarding deadlines, but…
What a horrible message this sends to a group of folks that have been their biggest fans. Perhaps they didn’t intend to send such a message, but the perception (for most) is pretty rotten. I had honestly hoped they would have had more damage control than this. Third party developers can’t wait forever for API’s and given the new “App Store” world that we live in, I fear many are going to see this tardiness as simply exclusion and move on.
However great some of the core concepts may be, I fear if no one is left to step up and restore the functionality (as suggested by Apple’s FAQ) then this app may die on the vine.

A major serious marketing problem. Present it to high end pros at NAB SuperMeet and then deliver something that niche specifically can’t use at least upon release. By Apple standards the release was very “quiet” which is why I suspect they were backed into a difficult place that they couldn’t market out of. No “special event’ and no Apple home page “splash.” Even the Apple Retail stores didn’t have it on display for some time.

I suspect Apple is talking quietly to developers about things. Stu Maschwitz said on his own blot that they’re talking to Apple.

I suspect FCPX sales are high enough that development will happen. Plugin makers are doing what they can given the severe limits at the moment. There’s a lot of money riding on this from all parts including Apple, not that that’s any guarantee of success. I do think Apple is motivated because I think they’re hopping FCPX would sell Macs.

August 31, 2011 at 6:24 amCan anyone explain why anyone is twisting themselves into a pretzel trying to make FCP X work for them? What’s the point?
We had a program that worked for virtually every professional need – we just wanted it faster with no transcoding — instead we got an Alpha release that doesn’t do…..well we all know what it doesn’t do.
And we’ve paid 300 for the privilege of working out the bugs for Apple for who knows how long?
This is absurd — speculating what Apple might do and when they might do it — folks who do this for a living don’t have time to learn a half baked program — we’re busy helping clients with programs that work as advertised

“Because the parts that are working are so good, simple as that.
