    Hi Olly,

I don’t know whether you were using SxS or SDHC, but it sounds like you are using SDHC. It is a controversial point as some people like Craig have had more luck than me with SDHC. Anyway, I had SDHC cards fail twice on me during a shoot when I first got my EX3. Luckily, I was able to retrieve pretty much all the clips, but it seriously dented my confidence in the camera. I decided at that point to fork out for 2 new Sony SxS 16Gb cards. That was over 18 months ago and have never had this problem again.

As I said, other people have had more success with the SDHC cards than me and they are probably better now than they were 18 months ago. But I’m not really prepared to take the risk again.

    Barry,

I’ve had this trouble intermittantly and in my case it seems to be caused by odd render files getting into the FCP package contents. I’ve no idea how this happens (scratch, render etc. files are always set correctly as far as I’m aware), but it does seem to be an issue.

Anyway, have a look in Applications, then CTRL Click Final Cut Pro /Show Package Contents / Contents / at this point have a look to see if there are render files or a render folder. They can sometimes appear inside the MacOS folder.

This has solved the same issue for me a number of times. Hope this helps.

… Is it that conformity that’s making you want to experiment or are your clients complaining?

Hi Andy – haven’t had any complaints – I just worry that I’m not pushing the creative boundries and being too formulaic sometimes!

I use the XDCAM EX timeline for editing all the time now. I have tried using prores for rendering but can’t see any difference in render times / quality etc, apart from generating larger render files. Keeping in the native format seems to work fine here.

  • Sorry – only managed to do the experiment for real yesterday. I must admit that I was pretty hard-pressed to notice the difference between either of them. They both came out staggeringly well, which I was really pleased about. When compared to the DSR450 (with J21 lens) shots I think they actually had a slight edge over them.

Admittedly this was in a conference environment, would be good to experiment with outdoor shots …… a job for another day!

    Cheers, Martin.

Yes, same as Ron, I’ve found no problem editing XDCAM EX natively in FCP (with the re-wrapping of course) – tried the ProRes Rendering route but all seemed slower and making self contained movies took forever. In the XDCAM EX Easy setup it all works quickly and cleanly. I’ve made a new custom Easy Setup so that I can input / output via the Kona LHi. All works well, even with layered graphics etc.

Did the update this morning and have been working all day on system without any problems.

Have found that any external SATA problems seemed to be eradicated by switching on the drives before turning the MacPro on. Get a few weirdnesses otherwise.

Just my experience, for what it’s worth!

    Martin.

Hi Rory – I was in the same boat as you with almost the same setup. I was having regular crashes and slight weirdness with FCP6. So I did a complete reinstall of everything but upgrading to FCP7. It has all been a lot more stable since doing this – I’m not sure whether that has something to do with the clean install. Anyway, I am slightly of the opinion that the combination of FCP6 and Snow Leopard was where the problems lay. Anyway, I am 2 weeks into the new install and it certainly seems better. Hope this helps. Martin

March 3, 2010 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Upgrading the EX-3 Fujinon Lens

Yes, I can vouch for the Fujinon XS17X5.5BRM. I had similar problems with the notchy zoom on the stock lens and it was becoming a real issue. I swapped to this lens last August and have not looked back. The picture, to my eye, is noticably sharper, and seems to have more depth. Also, I can follow zoom / creep zoom reliably. I have also found focusing a lot easier and more precise. Yes, it does throw the balance a bit, but if you are mainly on a tripod, it’s not a problem. It did add another £5k to the cost of the camera, but in my opinion it has certainly been worth it. I feel that it put the EX3 onto another level
