As I read it, the link refers to commercial photographers/videographers (i.e. not personal/private photography/videography).

Sometimes barriers are put in place just to discourage.

It’s over 80 pages when printed. He really liked iMovie ’09. I wonder if Randy had a word in his ear back in 2009…

I just started using Camtasia Mac at work. They bring me PPTs with videos and we record their VO as it runs. I make a Flash presentation at the end of it which I burn to CDs for distribution. The video it outputs is standard MP4 so I could put it on a webpage by itself if so desired, or drop the whole Flash thing into a web page. I did need to make an alteration to the MIME types on the server – can’t remember now, I think it was XML.

Camtasia Mac isn’t as full-featured as Camtasia for Windows but it costs a lot less and I get to use it on my Mac. Adobe Captivate is much better still, much more powerful and you can create self-contained or SCORM compliant quizzes with branching, but it costs a lot more, has a steeper learning curve and is overkill for what I do.

[Dennis Radeke] “A DI codec still has uses to be sure, but when you can natively handle all media (including ProRes) the actual need for a DI for 90%+ of users is probably nil. If you can shoot, edit, color grade and in some cases even deliver a feature film (an indie, anyway) without ever leaving the native format, I’d say you’re doing just fine without a DI. “
And that’s me and my work in a nutshell. I’ll go one step further: the ability to use, say, h.264 natively means that a lot of us won’t need those fancy Thunderbolt drives either. AVCHD is around the same bitrate as DV. A good FW800 drive can deliver ~600 mbps. I reckon I could run 10 streams through that and would probably bog down the CPU before I saturated the FW bus. Even better: take an iMac with an i7, SSD at 2TB SATA drive. Running everything from internal drives, the CPU would (once again) be the limiting factor. How limiting will be interesting to see…

  • [Aindreas O Gallchoir] ” I don’t know anyone who would allow colour correction, stabilisation and auto categorisation to get blasted on all clips at input “
I think that FCP X does an analysis of the clips on ingestion, so they are ready for correction. I’ve used stabilisation on FCP and that analysis bit takes a long time so anything that speeds that up is a Good Thing.

“People detection” for FCP X didn’t quite sound like person detection by face, but that would be handy.

  • [Sohrab Sandhu] “1. Price has gone down to $ 299. So effectively the worth of each license has gone down & application has become more dispensible to apple’s plans.”
Remember all those people saying “the top of the range dodecacore Mac Pro is really cool, but I don’t have anything that will use all that power”? Now they do. Apple’s going to sell truckloads of those towers. All to run a $300 app.

  • [Marcus Herrick] “Glad you like my plugs.

    Me three. Thanks for them.

[Walter Soyka] ” I don’t like having the read mechanism bundled with the storage medium”
That’s a great summary of the problem.

[Walter Soyka] “Most of our work is motion graphics, so I went the archive route — as are a lot of shops that use tapeless workflows. An LTO5 tape backup system”

It’s ironic that a tapeless workflow still involves a tape 🙂
