  • You’ve a bit of a conundrum there. It’s not so much that your have the hands obscuring the face as you still have pretty clean sections of both sides of the head and forehead to work with. The problem comes from having nothing to derive any perspective in order to get a 3D cam solve. I was going to ask what the source footage looks like w/o the greenscreen removal (if there’s texture there to track), but even so it’s a locked off camera so there’s still no perspective change.

Ideally, you want to find a method of deriving a 3D null from your tracked head points that can be used to make a nodal point null of the head for mostly rotational info. I’m not sure how one goes about that but perhaps there is a way. Seems like a common issue. You might pose this question on the Imagineering Systems forums. See if you can pique Mary or Martins’ interest to help.

What about going the other way; bring this footage into your 3D app & animate the helmet to the actor? Basically, Z position is just a guess as there’s no Z translation, and scaling to what you see is going to be the determining factor. I think that ultimately might be the easier route. A lot of keyframing but…

  • Unless you have a specific file that needs layers, alphas, etc., I’d think simply converting to PNG format would get you a long way with memory conservation and w/o a spec of image quality loss. I’ve never used the APX format, but the little research I did says it can convert to png. Might be a slow process so set up a batch process if you can. I don’t believe Photoshop supports APX though. Keep the same file name & size of course; you’re just changing format.

I ran a test on a project I’m currently working on where one of the PSD’s is just under 500 Megs. Converting to png knocked it down to under 1/10th. Checking them in AE on my HD monitor in an A B comparison showed no difference at all.

In your project window, you’ll have to do them one at a time but simply do a Replace Footage … and select the appropriate png file for the same named apx. All of you comps will update accordingly.

Don’t know if there’s any rule of thumb on amount of files & sizes. Perhaps someone else will chime in along those lines.

It’s got to be something that accidentally got clicked or set then. I doubt it’s a bug.

No response yet from the Rainbox forum I gather. Unless you can get a fresh set of eyes, you’ll probably have to do some forensics to back track through the expressions I suspect. And it’ll be something frustratingly simple once you find it of course.

Good luck. Hope you find it quickly. Perhaps post an update when you do.

  • How are you initially importing; as footage or as a comp? That might be the issue, although it shouldn’t be. If you load as footage, then it’s a single file in the project window and it updates as expected.

I just tested with an AI file imported as footage and in the project window simply selected Reload, and it updated with a newly added layer.

If you’ve imported as a comp though, you can update layers but it won’t see add’l layers. You’ll have to re-import in that case. You can then bring the new layer into the original comp if you’ve already done work in AE.

It’s confusing at times and I find that i always have to run some tests to refresh the memory.

  • Perform a Replace Footage instead. Don’t know why AI is finicky this way when PhotoShop is fine with it.

I haven’t used DUIK for awhile so pretty rusty with it, but really liked it over most all else out there. I got the update while I was at it looking for some suggestions.

I was going to suggest posting a message at https://forum.rainboxprod.coop, but I see you’ve already done that. I suspect so that’ll be your best bet for a quick, direct answer. Not comforting when a deadline looms I know.

Looking at your images, the only thing I’m seeing is that the controls selected in the first two have expressions so yes, they would be locked. The 3rd, has the expressions disabled, so one would think you should be able to move those; same thing with the 4th with plain keys.

Have you considered something outside of AE, such as your mouse dying or simply needing fresh batteries? Sounds almost silly, but I asked that on a Lightwave forum and that actually turned out to be the case.

Does it do this with a freshly created comp & rig?

Well, if given the luxury of reshooting, definitely take advantage.

I’m wondering if this might be something done rather quickly in Element 3D and with considerably fewer items to manage.

There was a very old Mocha tutorial on doing something very similar to this but with building where the camera tracked or tilted vertically and no one section was in frame the entire time. Look for videos on unlinked tracking perhaps.

  • Take a look at this tutorial, right here on the COW.
