Motion tracking a panning shot of a close-up
Hey there guys,
I began to work on a short video wherein one of the scenes the room is on fire.

I’ve used a tripod but am now facing a more challenging shot where the camera is panning upwards. Because of this, there’s a lack of tracking points and I’m not sure how to get around it.
Here’s a sample of the shot I’m trying to track:

There was a very old Mocha tutorial on doing something very similar to this but with building where the camera tracked or tilted vertically and no one section was in frame the entire time. Look for videos on unlinked tracking perhaps.

I’ve tried it before to no avail. Luckily, since it was shot in my flat, I managed to reshoot the scene and hopefully will get it this time.

Thanks, Mark. I’ve reshot the scene using a tripod and because I’m shooting with the raw option from Magic Lantern, I’m planning to scale the footage and create the panning movement in post.
I’ll definitely look into that!

could you track the foreground…with a null and camera setup and move the fire layer in 3d space until it looked all right.

Well, if given the luxury of reshooting, definitely take advantage.
