At this point, the main advantage is that it is supported in earlier versions of AE such as CS6. There are some conveniences having the plug-in version certainly, but for the mostpart there’s nothing you can’t do in one vs. the other. I would suggest getting MochaImport+ if you go the stand alone route though as that adds some nice functionality.

Had to d/l the clip & to a quick drag from head to tail to even see what movement you were talking about. Seems it’s mostly a Z-axis roll with some x-y. I’d probably turn off Mocha’s Perspective & Shear when tracking & definitely use the Small Motion setting.
You might wish to look at some of the tutorials here but in particular:

[Greg Howell] “Does anybody know how I would achieive this effect? I’m thinking it started as a morph using liquify, then a pixelated gradient was used as to a time displacement?

am I right? Just wondering what stages were involved”
Think your on the right track. Clever effect in any case. Save out the GIF then open it in Photoshop to study frame by frame.
There’s a combo of displacements I think, temporal & spacial, then overlaid on the grids (L-R and Verticals) that are grads getting their values ramped making additive/destructive regions & then used as Track Mattes. If that makes any sense. Whew!

May 24, 2018 at 5:08 pm in reply to: Preview turns black when I add a rotation keyframeYou’ve an expression on Transform along with a Wiggle effect so one of those is “competing” & moving your layer out of view I’m guessing. Try disabling just one or the other to isolate the culprit. You might try a custom view to see where it’s getting moved to as a clue if it’s rotation or translation.
Also, you might try moving the wiggle effect below the transform effect to see if stacking order is a factor.

May 23, 2018 at 2:43 am in reply to: A place to get feedback rather than technical issues?[Steve Davies] “In my role, I have been asked to work on 10 clips. I am fairly new to ‘MoGraph’ and have just got on with them but I really need to share them with some people for advice and feedback. Is this the best place to share? Problem is they also need to go live end of the week.
This is the only peer group I am part of.”
Don’t know if we should feel honored or pity. “In your role” sounds as if you drew the short straw Steve.
As has been mentioned, go ahead & post links but to be honest I don’t know how much time that gives you if you’re hoping to make changes with your time constraint. As time is tight & you’re just looking for opinions, I’d throw the clips onto a tablet or laptop & go find a nearby bar that’s the demographic your aiming for & start showing them there. Quicker feed back & probably as valid as most from here. Save the bar tab receipt for the rest of your group to reimburse you for “market research”.

Search your plugs list for Grow Bounds and add that above Shine in the Effects Panel list.

At first it sounds like a task for Mocha (or RotoBrush if you’re brave), but as others have indicated perhaps more details of the shot are in order. The ONLY reason for having a bg of a particular color is to facilitate creating a clean mask or alpha channel. If your foreground subject is a mime wearing striped B&W clothes, in clown white make-up & wearing a red tam, you could use an amethyst bg. for that matter. The point being, really examine what is specifically needed to accomplish the task.

Sounds like a UV mapping issue with your new poly. You’ll have to dig down into E3D and look at what it’s defaulted too for that geometry. Should be a quick & easy tweek.

Here’s one that works quite well. It’s just a GUI that takes the pain out of using command line syntax of FFmpeg.
https://aescripts.com/aempeg/I mainly use it for clients that insist on ProRez files.
To be honest though, I don’t think that’s the issue with not being able to render out to a relatively small comp unless the output type chosen is somehow aspect chauvinistic. Frankly, I’d just render out to a lossless sequence then convert.
