I just had this problem Monday – make sure you’re working in RGB color, and not CMYK, indexed color, etc.

My first inclination is to use C4D to do the drop, but if that isn’t at your disposal, then perhaps the link below to one of Mr. Rabinowitz’s wonderful tuts will help you establish the look of a bloody surface….

Cineversity is the greatest resource for C4D tutorials, although most of the videos require a membership (which is definitely worth the money). Also, I would suggest stopping by fxguide, as they have a bunch of great basic comping resources.

Wow, Ben, that’s really incredible stuff. This is a great help!

I could animate the object with a motion path, but I was looking for a more simple solution (as I need to do all sorts of funky stuff with ramping the rate of travel around the triangle, etc). Also, using an expression forces me to learn the code and sort of reverse-engineer certain scripting concepts, as I am still a novice. Your help is very, very much appreciated.

Also, I checked out your reel and was floored – you have some killer work!

There is a little problem with the way an alpha channel is encoded when using H.264 compression on a PC. If this is your set-up, I’ll pass along a website with a (hopeful) solution.

Thanks for your reply, Adolfo.

Unfortunately, I’m working entirely with square pixels. Is there any other type of filtering I should be aware of? The stroke looks fine when applied to text, but always looks eaten away when working with masked solids. I perhaps should have mentioned that I am working in CS3.
