Motion 5 is completely rewritten as a 64-bit application. It renders in 16-bit color space instead of 8-bit in Motion 4. It is fully color managed (it interprets color profiles). It has a fantastic new keyer.
Otherwise, there are not really any other new features.

You can certainly roto in Motion using the Bezier pen tool and recording keyframes – I wouldn’t recommend it for a complex shape, better to use a dedicated app like Mocha.

Actually, Apple created a whole bunch of brand new Motion templates – but they aren’t in Motion, they are in FCP X, in the browsers for title, transitions, effects, generators, and themes. From there, you can open any of them in Motion. You need to think of these browsers in FCP X as the new location for what used to be the Templates Browser.
Apple brought forward most of the Motion 4 HD templates within Motion 5 (some with the app, some as the supplemental content download). They did not bring the SD templates forward.

Rather than using a replicator, I would “build” each side of your wall to create thickness the same way you would build a cube – by rotating and placing planes in 3D space.

Sure you can. Just select the letters you want to change – you can change the font, style, color, whatever of the selected glyphs in a text layer.

If you want your Motion project in FCP X you need to publish it as a generator.
Where have you heard FCPX is filled with bugs? That has not been my experience at all.
The workflow between Motion 5 and FCP X is totally different than Motion 4 and FCP 7. It works, you just need to know what to do.

If it’s not showing up in the Update section, go to the Purchases section of the App Store. If it’s there with an Install button, first trash your current copy of the app, then you should be able to install – I had the same issue on my Mac Pro (all went well on the laptop as well).
However, if your card is not compatible, it still may not install. See:
