Now I better understand your question. I don’t believe there’s any way to do that.

Yes that is true – and best to put them on a drive that is being backed up regularly, or on a drive that does not contain your source libraries.

    1) Our training was incorrect, the backups are stored in the Movies folder as you discovered

    2) Opening a backup doesn’t affect the current library. It’s completely separate.

    3) Backups of libraries don’t include media, even if the library is “managed” -e.g., media is store in the library. Rather, the backup contains sym links to the actual media location

    4) They’ve worked just fine in our testing.

As long as you keep your media external to the library and you aren’t trying to share projects you should be ok.

When you update, none of your render files are carried over.

It’s just a package – right click, show contents, and it’s an exact copy of your camera folder structure.

I definitely recommend making camera archives, and then importing from those for your edit. They are your backup, and if you every have corrupted or lost media in a project, you can use FCP X’s “Restore from Camera Archive” (or similar) command to relink all those file immediately.

Seems to be some misunderstanding here. If you import directly from a camera’s card or a camera archive in FCP 10.1, your options are to either import into a Library (as “managed media”) or to any external location of your choosing (“external media”). You cannot “Leave in Place” because it makes no sense to be reading media off a card that you can eject (and a camera archive behaves just like a card). It has nothing to do with FCP X not being able to read the media or rewrapping the media.
