A $10K+ option many installers failed to see as necessary… needless to say the deck I’m working with has no FC options.

FCP 6.0.5 (with the rest of FCStudio), Mac Pro (10.4.11, 16GB RAM, 2×2.6Ghz Dual Core). Video hardware = MOTU V4HD (which can do hardware pulldown insertion – not at issue here). Sequence material would be Apple ProRes 1080, 23.976fps. Need to deliver on HDCAM 1080, 29.97fps. If, for example, I need to give someone with a Nitris DX my edit so they can do some finishing and color, and they’re doing the broadcast output, knowing that Nitris cannot do the pulldown insertion, how can I give them a pulldown-inserted file? That’s a purely speculative question, but one that has actually come up in my wake. I ended up using V4HD to output to tape (with pulldown) and then used Nitris to capture the whole edit (1080, 29.97) back in. How could this be achieved in software, without having to roundtrip through the machine? FYI, this method worked, my questions are purely speculative and do not apply to any of my current tasks…

In my small world, even I have encountered this issue, so I know it’s happening and it’ll probably become more and more a standard (mastering at 23.976, delivering for broadcast at 29.97).

rafael”Forgive my ignorance, but I’ve never seen any toggle or menu feature that does this. Is it as simple as setting the video output in Audio/Video Setup to a 29.97 output? Not around the system at the moment, but I’d be surprised. Is it a proper 2:3 pulldown? Also, how would you edit your 24p sequence to a 29.97 tape? I’m confused…

If the HDCAM has the DigiBeta playback option card, it’ll do an awesome upconvert. I have an SR machine with that card. I don’t know if the non-SR machines had the option, but it would not hurt to ask your rental facility. The upconvert options on the SR have the anamorphic, crop letterbox, and edge-crop (pillarbox), as well as all sorts of image enhancing things to mess with.

What are you using to capture video? Some of the better capture devices have upscaling technology built in, so you can feed it SD and it will upscale nicely to 1080.

Also note that the “remaining time” for H.264 encodes (if that’s what you’re doing) shows up improperly when doing multi-pass. It will take a chunk of time processing from 0-35% on the progress bar and then zip on through from 35-100%. The best method I’ve used is to try an encode of 30 seconds of material, let it run through, and then however long that took just multiply to find how long (in reality) your encode will take.

As a user of V4HD (and its foibles) I can say that if I had a choice to get something new I would look at something new. That is, *not* V4HD, which at this point is behind in both price point and features (for the most part). And most definitely behind in stability – for everything they packed into this thing they did not mention in the manual that you’d have to reboot almost every time you make a change…
