I’ve been looking up the ‘best’ SD youtube settings and am compressing a 3’40 HDV timeline- no crazy effects or anything complex. As it stands now, I am looking at an astonishing 20 hours of calculating power…

I ‘only’ have a G5 QUAD with 4 GB of RAM, but something like 30 minutes would seem more in order here…?

Have you done a render all with “Full” checked in the drop down menu?

Have you exported a QT self contained file at current settings to use in Compressor?

If not, do those things… Then, let Compressor have it’s way with your stuff and I’ll bet you a hundred bucks it doesn’t take 20-hours to do the crunching, no matter what the countdown says.

Also note that the “remaining time” for H.264 encodes (if that’s what you’re doing) shows up improperly when doing multi-pass. It will take a chunk of time processing from 0-35% on the progress bar and then zip on through from 35-100%. The best method I’ve used is to try an encode of 30 seconds of material, let it run through, and then however long that took just multiply to find how long (in reality) your encode will take.

You’re doing a lot of betting these days, Weiss. Are you just compensating for not being at NAB?

It’s a lot more exciting to bet with money you don’t have than with real money.

You know what, David- I’ll take you on on that bet. And I’d like to inform you right away that you’ve lost… (left my G5 on overnight, this morning it was 9 hours and 13 to go)
I don’t know what’s going on- a straight compression to h264 is not much of a problem. Must be something particular in the settings that screwed Compressor up…
