I’ve been using LTO 5 with Pre Roll Post software from Imagine products for years. I recently retrieved a 5 year old file from tape archive that was archive with the first beta version of this software without any issues. Tape archives for my money are way more secure than spinning platters or SSD drives for my money. I have also archived whole FCPX and FCP 7 libraries, projects to LTO and brought them back years later without any issues. Aside from the initial hardware/software investment, the POM ( peace of mind) factor with using tape archives is very high with me.

Make an image sequence in compressor and export as a .mov and then bring that into FCPX and have at it. I’ve done quite a bit of time lapse and this method has worked well for me if the amount of stills more than a couple of thousand. Even then it’s better than making the sequence in FCPX and then turning it into a a compound clip.

I think I stumbled into the Dummy smart collection in odd way on a recent project. While the project was relatively small, the shooting ratio was sort of high and I went through and renamed clips as i thought appropriate ( changing names from the camera clip number to something more meaningful) taped out my favorites and added some keywords. When editing I found it was far easier and faster to do a search which flew in the face of some of the older style organizing that I did, creating events for particular shoot days . While I can still see some reasons to do that, some of which might be not willing to let go of that method of organizing, I could see that with appropriate tags and metadata applied, searches and keywords can be amazing fast in finding groups of materials or specific items.
This was sort of an accidental stable for me that was a happy accident, and i reading Simon’s post I can see now how well his method could play out in some editorial scenarios. -
+1 for Compressor making image sequences . I frequently do time lapse with thousands of digital stills. Making the image sequence in compressor is fast and easy, then export as .mov, suck it into FCPX and bada bing.

Or not?Actually FCPX as compared to Legacy does make me a better editor, because the editing software bullshit kind of gets out of my way and lets me edit. I don’t edit for a living, but I am spending more time at it and only doing that will make me a better editor. I welcome further enhancements to X even though it might take me years to really put them to good use.

I know you guys signed agreements and have to honor them. If apple has been taking the submitted suggestions seriously and incorporating some of the most requested ones, FCPX will be even better than it is, not that it will make me a better editor necessarily.

The radio silence about FCPX is deafening

April 15, 2016 at 2:09 am in reply to: Michael Cioni on X and modern workflows for NAB 2016I’m not hating on anyone or anything. If Cioni were female he would be taken to task for his appearance, so I’m just trying to apply the rules in a fair way…. that’s all.
Cioni is a vastly talented guy and I recognise that, I also use and like FCPX….

I was trying to group select then go to the inspector and generate proxies from that path, This was suggested by the FCPX help menu. I’ll try it your way and see what happens. – And yes, your suggestion was spot on and so simple.

I mostly shoot and do some editing , and that balance may flip over time. I can say from the shooting side of the story I tend to err on the side of content especially since I do a fair amount of Doc work and seldom do we have the chance to make all the pieces work together because of the situations we find ourselves in . I try to optimize always but 12 hours into a shoot day when a subject suddenly opens a new avenue content wise in what could be the worst situation there are always compromises. Bad sound will break a doc much quicker than a less than perfect shot.
