First off I like to rename camera clips so they actually have some meaning , master shot , drone coverage of …. etc so I am not looking at the character- number combos of origianl camera files. If I was cutting a feature , I would not do this but for other projects its fine. Then I can either Favorite and name the favorite something descriptive and add a note to the notes field or Keyword and add notes. From there smart collections can be built, you’ll have keyword collections and when searching you can search the notes field for more granular results.

X and I have sort of kissed and made up. I reimported the needed clip which was the master shot in my multicam clip and get it synced up without blowing up the project. Multicam is really pretty sweet once you have a groove going and makes multi camera editing so easy… Its pretty frustrating when something like what happened in my case where all I had to do was change the final shot of the project and the world comes tumbling down for some explicable reason as a result. I still have another project to cut using Multicam, so fingers crossed this next one goes much better.

Yep . Created proxies after import . Fcpx gives the Option to do that . Basically all my BMPCC footage is yellow triangles . The one clip that I actually need for the cut I’m working on is the focus now . I did a little work on it after tearing hair out ( took me 10’seconds to make the last requested change and 2 hours of mucking around trying to get my original footage back in the multi am clip ) I’m still not sure I’m back 100% and won’t till later today when I can open the project again .

I do have the clips backed up. The director emailed me with one last change – a cut to a different angle for the close. I open the project , make the cut. am a bout to share and realize I need to switch to original media. I make the switch and the project goes off the rails, yellow triangles abound. Makes me wonder why some one would cut a feature on X when a 17 minute cut in multicam blows up this easily.

So the angle that has disappeared, the source of the yellow triangle, was a BMPCC file pro res. In project browser the time code for each clip starts at 0 and the duration is zero which is probably the FCPX screw up. If I show package contents of the library the BMPCC files are aliases which is weird since when I imported the files into the library they should have been copied to the library…..

Yes, I made a snapshot of the project then had to add in an new angle to the multicam clip. I went back to the original multicam clip added the angle, but the added angle did not appear in the snapshot version of the project…. But now I have bigger problems- see my new post.

I the card was formatted and had additional new material recorded to it, then some of the desired files may be over written and useless. Rescue Pro deluxe will recover files on a formatted card, but that files that have been overwritten, just to be clear.

I would run that app anyway which will get back anything that was not recorded over.

I had this come up once a few years ago. I formatted a card that had not been backed up, but did not record over it. I used Rescue pro Deluxe and got all the files I needed off the card without problem.

Sorry I took the short cut with an abbreviation. PRP= PreRollPost (see imagineproducts.com) which is software that I use for LTO back up and retrieval from LTO volumes. PRP allows for incremental back up, but since tape is linear not random access, you can’t “free up space by deleting a file as you would with a hard drive. Tape just doesn’t work that way.

There has been quite a bit of progress in the LTO world since LTO 5 . There are Thunderbolt compatible drives and USB 3 compatible LTO drives available at this point which makes the CPU interface easy.
Mdrive is a good thunderbolt option.
Tape drives are robust. I have a Quantum SDLT600A drive that has been gathering dust for some years and the other day I pulled it off the shelf and loaded a tape that must be 7 years old. My experience with spinning platters as archive devices has not been so terrific….

I have good confidence in Tape back ups vs Drive back ups. I have pulled material, even just recently off the first LTO back up I made with Prerollpost software that was in beta when I used it in 2012. That tape had been sitting in a case since 2012. I like that.

I think LTO has a good shelf life and since the road map for LTO generally supports 2 legacy generations, I think long term archival is still better than drives over the long run, and LTO media costs generally drop quite a bit over the life of a format.

Incremental back up with PRP is a possible- one can set a watch folder and a background back up time for PRP to run and it will back up only new files added to the watch folder. If an archive has diminished in size for what ever reason, PRP doesn’t delete those files from the archive as its not a random access storage device like a disk drive where its possible to write over selected sectors.
