I understand about the Rec2020 color space and color wheels working correctly. What stands out for me is that I didn’t set the project up as Rec 2020 . I imported a couple of my Red clips into my sandbox library, Picked on and threw it in a new project without specifying Rec 2020 wide gamut color. When I went to explore rough grading, color wheels worked as they should which I found surprising, so maybe FCPX is getting some info from Redcode 4 files that filters into the project setting behind the scenes.

I was messing around with some R3d files I shot over the weekend prior to setting a library for the project. I imported a couple of R3d files into my sandbox project and was making a few color adjustments and I noticed tht color wheels worked as expected with redcode 4 files. I was a little surprised and had to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me, but the color wheels in 10.4 played nice with my footage.

Yep . I didn’t do animation on EIAJ decks but I definitely went through the school of makin 5 edits attempts to get one clean edit in the right place..

I ususally use apple devices 720P in FCPX sharing pane. Its a decent trade off between quality and size. Obviously you can create a preset that is even lower Fi than this. This built in preset seems to check the reasonable quality/file size trade off for me.
I’ll up load the output file to my DB account and send the link to the necessary people from there. Frame IO is another option worth exploring.

This strategy should work for you. I ran into the same problem a while back and was perplexed for a bit till I figured this out.

If you select a range of a clip, say subject answers question 1 of 4 interview questions, then favorite the selection , you can add notes to the note field lets say a transcription of the answer. Once favorited, you can also change the name “favorite” to something more meaningful to you. the same range can also be keyworded if. You are so inclined .
This may solve your problem.

The way color wheels work in rec 709 is giving me acid flashbacks to doing a tech set up on a analog video camera , say a PC70. Back in those days it was the case that engineering set up controls were pretty interactive, so if you adjusted black shading, it affected white shading, so then you’d have to re adjust white shading to compensate, with an inevitable trip back to black shading again as you balanced controls in an iterative process that was boring and time consuming. Color wheels work prety much like this in Rec 709 . This might be what apple intended but I think they have some serious explaining to do about WHY this is better, OR they better fix it fast. Color wheels are nice, I want them to work, but they are just a waste of time for rec 709.
I watched a color grading tutorial on youtube the other day touting the new color wheels. Throughout the tutorial the WFM in X was visible and as the tutor went through adjustments to his sample footage, levels moved up, and levels moved down . Net result was that his sample looked the same post grade as pre grade, nothing had changed, all the while the tutor was struggling with the fact the if he tried to adjust either the highlights or shadows, the adjuste he made affected the whole image.
I say Apple needs to roll out 10.4.1 with color wheels that work , darned soon. -
If you have a scene or location, say “exterior of house” that needs a particular correction and you know you will use it a number of times you can make the correction once, save it as an effect, name it “House Exterior” and it appears in the effects browser. Then select all the clips that need that correction and drag that saved House Exterior effect from the browser on to the clips and you’re done. Pasting attributes or effects is a quick solution some times but you have to be careful with paste effects because it will affect both picture and sound in the clip you are applying the paste effects to and that may not be what you want.

I am curious as to why you think the behavior of the color wheels is a feature and not a bug? It looks like a bug, or, over all gain in place of a control that would affect a particular range of values.
If this represents some sort of paradigm shift, I’m not convinced I actually need it. -
I’ve just used color wheels and checked the highlight control on a clip I was grading. There is some crossover when manipulation the highlight control but it is no different than color curves or color board on my system. From what I see the grading effect behaves as I would expect.
