To be clear, you want to search in an event by name , say for a clip name, or something else?

Hey if what you have is working, then let it work. I’ve bumped heads with sub clipping and keywording a few times and what I wrote about works for me. I’m interested in how you solved the problem so if you have some screen shots or notes you can share, that would be appreciated. -
So is your problem recovering the files or just playing them and getting them into a codec you can import and edit?
Some years back through some digital bumble f*ck of my own, I formatted a card that had crucial files on it . I managed a recovery with Rescue pro, VLC could play the files but they weren’t in any form the FCPX could import. I used Imagine products Proxymill now called primetime transcoder to process the files into pro res 1080 HD and that saved the day.

March 20, 2018 at 9:57 pm in reply to: FCPX – How do you add Notes to a tagged range and not the entire clip? Here’s how I ‘subclip’ inrterviews or any clip for that matter. Taking a cue from Bill Davis, I go thru my interview clips and for the particular bits I want, I place ‘in’ and out markers, then favorite (F key) the range. Please note if you want to keep all the ranges you have taped out in a clip visible, then after you select the first range, use the key combo cmd+shift I or O to add the second, third, fourth etc ranges. This way when you get around to actually picking bits to drop in the time line they are already defined as ranges and all you have to do is grab them and append, overwrite, insert edit what you already have defined. THe favorite field can be edited so it says something other than the ‘favorite’ placeholder text, or it could just be asterisks *. **. ***. ****Then I tab over to add notes to the notes field which could be a verbatim transcript or paraphrased transcript of the speaker’s words. Once this is done, then if you want to toss in some keywords for an additional layer of organization across interviews that you have sub clipped you can. So lets say you’ve interviewed 5 people about how being a teacher changed their lives. You sub clip as outlined above, then keyword their responses- for instance Most insightful moment as a teacher- . THis method gives you the subclipping inside of each clip PLUS a collection of responses from all interviewees about ‘most insightful moment as a teacher’.

At 25 FPS the camera shutter would nominally be 1/50 second which would become a key factor in characterizing motion blur of any movement in the frame. At 120fps, shutter speed would be 1/240 second so motion blur for each frame would be greatly reduced compared to the 25 fps scenes. -
I reject footage all the time in X , just to clear the decks a bit and focus on what really matters. I’ll toggle over to all clips occasionally as the edit progresses and look specifically at rejected clips to make sure I haven’t skipped over anything or use.

March 4, 2018 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Best plugin to “relight” flat or bad existing light footage in documentaryYour list for treating footage was quite specific and interesting. Since I shoot quite a bit, I rarely find myself in a position of having to rescue clips that were poorly lit or shot. THat said I am intrigued by what the results of your prescription for treating footage might look like. Have you got any before – after examples you could share? I’m really intrerested in seeing what kind of results you get.

I had a media 100 system with 4 gigs of the nosiest possible raid you can imagine. and I thought that was a lot of storage!

My short answer to your question about why no TB3 to FW800 connection is that FW800 is ancient history. I think your best shot is a TB to break out box with FW800 or the clunky adapter chain, or find an 2012- 2013 Macbook pro because those still had FW800 connectors built in, then run your capture scheme off of that CPU.
I haven’t tested this yet, but I think if I fed my DSR 20 a standard def signal while connected to to my iMac with FW, I would see that signal feed the deck come through to the Import window in FCPX and I could grab it there. Not sure I can actually test this as I don’t think I have a standard def signal source in my pile of disused gear.

The plan of playing a VHS through a deck that has firewire interface to you FCPX machine should work. I have done something similar with a JVC combo deck that was VHS and Mini DV and also my DSR 20. You’ll need a TB to firewire adapter, which will be 1394-800 and then a 1394 -800 cable to 1394- 400 cable with the proper 400 side of the cable to interface with your machine. All these cables exist, I have bought some recently, though you’ll likely need to order from an on line source. Once you connect your computer running FCPX to the deck, the deck should show up as a source in the import window.
