I think I figured this out …. I encountered a bunch of unexpected behaviors while trying to do what seems to be a simple task which was making me a bit crazy. One thing I discovered along the way is that it sure would be nice if the playhead in the browser was more visible ….. sometimes its like looking for a need in haystack.

Story in NYT today about Puerto Ricans being in survival mode, having lost homes, jobs, etc. Deep in the story is a mention of Luis Fonsi who donated a generator to the La Perla neighborhood where the Despacito video was shot . I take it that since that Neighborhood was close to the ocean, it was heavily damaged…
While Trump is busy patting himself on the back about the US response in Puerto Rico, truth is if you have ANY connections to the Puerto Rican community, you know that the island has been knocked most of the way back to the 18th century, power is still mostly out, cellphone communication is spotty and drinkable water is in short supply especially away from cities. There is a pretty significant migration of people leaving the island for the US at this point since the conditions are so bad there.
I enjoyed the article about Despacito and as some one who mostly works as a DP am amazed that they shot it all in a day… -

I’ve done a lot of long term timelapse some as long as 18 months. I use digital stills cameras in weather tight housing with solar/battery power systems and programmable controllers. Its kind of a waste to throw a digital cinema camera at the job as far as I am concerned. Even a relatively inexpensive digital still camera will take rich enough photos that can be shaped into whatever you need in post. Use compressor afterwards to create a sequence of stills from your captured photos and away you go.
You can look to a place like Harbortronics for some ideas. I have used their gear for years in every kind of weather, even hurricanes and have come out well. -
Keep in mind that camera profiles are the enemy of light meters. If you try to use a light meter with say a canon C300 and EOS profile you’ll eventually find some meter reading that you can relate to exposure and image, but the exposure to image relationship will be very different if you used the same camera and a neutral profile.
Frequently you need to make some adjustments between meter iso setting & camera iso setting to get some agreement and consistency. So if your camera is set to 800 ISO and so is your meter but the image seems underexposed , you may have to set your meter to a lower ISO, like 640, 500 or 400 which means you’ll add more light to your scene to get the exposure result you want with the camera. -
I just opened a short HD project in 10.3.4 after installing HS on my 2012 macbook pro. My first take is that X is pretty snappy. I have a hour long multicam music project I can open later on this same laptop and that will be more of an acid test.

Using the gain method of ‘push 2 stops’ is also valid in terms of getting an idea of what the shift in levels will be though i have slightly less trust in this method than the optical/ sensor method. One thing the gain method does is it shows you directly what the noise penalty might be for a 2 stop push. So start at your base iso, maybe its 800, then bump up to 1600, then 3200 keeping f stop and lighting the same. You may discover some differences in the image depending on whether its pushed in post or in camera with gain.
