I’d caution anyone even remotely interested in trying to use the “fair use” defense to research it thoroughly. Plenty of documentarians point to the it as a “shield” for their project. You can wish it… but it just ain’t true.

I think you’ve just identified your problem! Keep the project lean and you won’t have these kind of issues. We use the basic Mac filing system to organize the media. The actual projects often have little more than the sequence in them. This makes it much easier to do the kind of “home and office” kind of editing that you’re describing.

One of our editors works out of Sante Fe, New Mexico. We’re in LA. We’re regularly reconnecting her projects to our media here. Works well. You just gotta stay on top of “project size growth”.

You may not be aware that the recent QT player introduced a TIME CODE reader as a standard part of the interface. It’s there in the bottom left corner of the frame. Pull down and change counter to “Timecode”.

Do you have access to another deck to try outputting the same sequence and see what happens? It sounds like your deck is responding to video that is “out of spec”… but typically that shouldn’t happen. If your color bars are showing up on the waveform correctly, then the deck should NOT have a problem recording them. Have you repatched or reconnected cables recently? Is anything out of whack?

If you’ve done all the mechanical things (clean heads, change tapes, etc.) and another deck with the same sequence works fine, then your deck is due for a servicing.

You don’t necessarily have to use media manager to copy the files. You can just do this at the finder level.

The 4 x 3 versus 16 x 9 issue is a settings thing. Somewhere along the line you’ve lost the correct settings on your media. This is another reason why NOT to use media manager and just copy the files.

I think your media manager settings have screwed up the passing of media back and forth. It appears that you have created “independent clips” with the incorrect setting.

Try taking just the media, moving at the finder level and then see what happens.

Try doing the reconnecting ONE CLIP AT A TIME.

This bug turned up in 6.0. Don’t know if it’s relevent to your situation, but worth a try.

And, don’t forget that compressor 3 makes distributed rendering MUCH quicker if you can use multiple CPU’s to do the rendering.

We’ve reduced our h.264 renderings from hours to just a few minutes (really!). This is done by harnessing up to 30 CPU’s at a time. But, even with one or two systems, the reduction in rendering time will be significant.
