    hey gang,

i am cutting a series. we are shooting super 16mm and transferring to HDCAM. i am editing in 23.98 from 29.97 DVCam sub-masters since we will be finishing in 23.98 HDCam. after loading in the footage at 29.97, we reverse telecine the files and cut away. because we are block shooting and cutting, our assistant loads in each block in a digitize suite and moves the reversed files to one of the two suites that will be cutting the block.

our problem arises when we use media manager to copy a project and its source files to an external drive to take home for the weekend and cut on a laptop (what editors don’t work 7 days a week??) in the past, what i have done after working off-site is brought the project back and simply copied the new sequences into the original project and relinked to the original files. (i’ve also done the same by exporting an xml from the copied project and importing into the original and relinking)

here’s the problem. after bringing in the new sequences, when we match frame a clip in a sequence, it comes up 4×3 (everything is in anamorphic) and even more annoying, when we hit “reveal master clip” it does not reveal the clip in the bin (it does nothing ) or it asks if we want to “add the master clip” to the project (although the master clip is in the project and relinked). ugh.

i am trying to convert a 16 year avid user to fcp and we’ve had a series of bugs in version 6 and this last one isn’t helping. for the sake of our ever increasing fcp community… 🙂
    any thoughts?

    thanks,
    ken

    Ken,

You don’t necessarily have to use media manager to copy the files. You can just do this at the finder level.

The 4 x 3 versus 16 x 9 issue is a settings thing. Somewhere along the line you’ve lost the correct settings on your media. This is another reason why NOT to use media manager and just copy the files.

I think your media manager settings have screwed up the passing of media back and forth. It appears that you have created “independent clips” with the incorrect setting.

Try taking just the media, moving at the finder level and then see what happens.

Good luck with your “avid vet”. That’s your problem… not ours. 🙂

    Thanks Mark,

in the past i have moved media at the root but because of the complexity and size of this project and the numerous additional elements like mixed audio stems, music, stock video elements and sfx it is not easy or practical to find all the elements, copy and relink.. especially the large sfx libraries. i’m not sure what we’re going to do.

[kenfile] “because of the complexity and size of this project”

I think you’ve just identified your problem! Keep the project lean and you won’t have these kind of issues. We use the basic Mac filing system to organize the media. The actual projects often have little more than the sequence in them. This makes it much easier to do the kind of “home and office” kind of editing that you’re describing.

One of our editors works out of Sante Fe, New Mexico. We’re in LA. We’re regularly reconnecting her projects to our media here. Works well. You just gotta stay on top of “project size growth”.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Mark,

The drives are as clean and neat as they can be but with so many common elements between projects, moving at the root isn’t possible. This is a unique situation because of the volume of material – 13 episodes being shot in blocks.

I’ll just have to figure out the glitch in media manager.

    Thanks,
    Ken

Im having the same problem with your same workflow that has ALWAYS worked in the past… Spoke to apple people and nothing… I understand all the media manager “haters” out there… and i understand that us with problems make up a small population of users… but this is still ridiculous… what worked before should still work today. APPLE FIX THIS PLEASE!!!!
