  • FCP as timecode master?

    Hi,

Background: I’m an audio engineer who’s been sucked into the wonderful world of HD video. I did a bit of video several years back on FCP, but now I’m re-learning the tool so please bear w/me.

I am currently helping to integrate an HD system, with a tight timeline. We need to integrate 2 FCP 6 (HD) machines, to be used for capture of live events, with a Sony PDWF70 XDCam deck plus two DSR-500 backups and separate audio record.

My questions are regarding FCP and timecode:

    1) Is there any way to chase FCP to external LTC?
    2) Is there any way to output LTC or VITC from FCP and use it as a master timecode source?
    3) In general how does one specify a timecode source (non ANC-space embedded) for capture? For example, how does one handle a film transfer with separate timecode track? or transfer from a video deck with subcode LTC only, and no VITC?

Obviously with these different formats timecode is a concern. We’re already stretching the budget so I don’t forsee being able to get additional RP-188 timecode embedders.

I looked for this info in the FCP manual but can’t seem to find anything. Any help as well as other insights or observations would be appreciated.

    Thanks from the video newcomer
    CG

A good place to start is with Virtual VTR:

FCP controls external machines via 9 pin or firewire and doesn’t output LTC. Nor does it chase lock to LTC. While it is playing out a timeline, it can output VITC but it is not a timecode generator.

You should check out “Picture Ready” from Gallery Software in the UK.

If you’re doing live ingest, this could be your best friend.

    Good Luck.
