It sounds like you’re trying to use an “avid” centric way of approaching your FCP project organization. I would suggest that you try “thinking different” and use the basic Mac file structure to organize your workflow. FCP can easily open up multiple projects, so you can have, for example, a “digitize” project, an “Effects” project” a “music” project, and so on.
Bottom line, use the basic Mac file structure to organize your work. It’s much more flexible than trying to make FCP to it all for you.

I’d just like to say that I’m a HUGE FAN of banning screen names. I’m much less likely to want to help someone who isn’t even willing to reveal his own ID. I’ve always posted under my real name, and respond better to others who do so as well. Good move.

All good advice and I agree with most of it.
I add one more thing to the “interview” process. I call it my “Technical proficiency exam”, but it’s really just one question. I say it’s worth double your starting salary if you nail it. So far, nobody has gotten it correct. Here it is: Explain to me the difference between drop frame and non drop frame time code.
In five seconds I know whether they’re BS’ing or not. A newbies answer to this question is just as revealing to me as looking at hours of their work… on line or via DVD. When viewing a sample reel there’s always the question of “who did what”. In an interview, very few people can bluff their way through.

Is this a trick question? What makes it a “Cine Alta” is that Sony says it’s a “Cine Alta”.
Much the same as when Porsche came out with the 914 or even their “Cayenne” SUV. Purists were aghast, but people certainly bought ’em, drove ’em and were happy with ’em. I think you’ll find the same thing with this camera. The “ASC” crowd may not like it, but they’re not the one’s this camera was built for.

#2. If I understand your goal… you’re trying to achieve a “collaborative” workflow.
Two choices: Networked systems with shared storage.
Duplicate media on two separate systems. The best way to pull this off is to have the media file structure on both systems EXACTLY the SAME. Then, you can go back and forth with a minimum of hassle. We use this method all the time for editors working in a different timezone. If the media file structure is identical, then the back and forth is really quite seamless.mark

Lives on top of Filemaker pro. Very comprehensive product for logging, managing, whatever. Works with one seat or a hundred. Very popular amongst many reality TV production companies.

I would strongly suggest that you investigate a networked workflow. There are plenty of solutions out there for a small set up such as yours: Facilis terrablock comes to mind, but there are others.
Going networked is probably a much more significant decision than what flavor of Kona card you choose. A group based workflow will CHANGE how you do business. One model of card or an other isn’t going to do that.
I’m partial to Apple’s X-SAN, but I recognize that for a small studio it may not be the most economic choice. Moving forward for the next few years, I can’t imagine you setting up a new operation and NOT having shared storage. It’s just too good to ignore, and the prices have come down to the point where you can’t say no.
Good luck. All of your other choices seem fine. I just urge you to consider shared storage… you’ll thank me later.
