[Jeff Kirkland] “Personally, I think HDR is a way bigger deal than any resolution increase.”

    I agree, Jeff.

If you’ve ever seen HDR playing next to standard HD (or 4k) the difference is IMMEDIATELY apparent.
That difference WILL sell more flat panels. Kinda like the diff between Standard def 4:3 and HD 16:9.

You immediately knew the HD was better. You can see it.

Plain old 4k is NOT much different beyond 9 feet. Adding HDR means you can see the diff from across the street. Your neighbors will see the difference, and you don’t even need to invite them in!

Conclusion: HDR WILL drive 4K conversion. 8K is still a parlor trick.

    Just my thoughts.

March 29, 2016 at 9:29 pm in reply to: NAB, what would like to see?

[Bob Zelin] “The day that video editing is as common as word processing (or writing a story with a pen and paper), ALL of our careers are over. “

    Bob,

You better start checking your 401K! That day is here. Now! In 4K!!!

Of course I’d argue that all the word processors in the world did NOT create better authors. To be a novelist is still a very rewarding career… if you achieve “star status”. Same thing applies to our world. There will always be room and reward for the “stars”. Everyone else fights for scale.

    Just my thoughts.

My First NLE was made by Eastman Kodak company.
    It was called FILM.

If Apple treats the “Car OS” like they have FCP-X, me thinks Elon has nothing to worry about!

    Bob Zelin is ALWAYS right!

  • As usual, Mr. Phillips answers the question quite thoroughly.

I would only add that the future trend for ALL acquisition formats is AWAY from XDCAM type discs and TOWARDS file based formats recorded to a memory chip. Therefore, if you’re contemplating making a change, you may want to skip “step #4” and think about “step #5”, which is chip based media. The workflow for that would be to copy your camera chips to shared media and transcode to an Avid friendly format… or not and just use AMA. There’s too many variables to suggest a specific best practice, but
be aware that XDCAM disc may go the way of the dinosaur.

You asked “what is the advantage” to Xdcam disc. One advantage is that you can box up all of the original source discs and turn them over to a network as a required “deliverable” element. For chip based media you’d have to hand over a drive (if acceptable) or LTO tape back up. Depending on the size of your media pool, this can be a BIG deal, and tilts in favor of XDCAM disc.

    Good luck.

September 10, 2015 at 6:41 pm in reply to: AVID – Why Not?

    Rich,

Why not? Better to ask, “WHY?”. The reasons that AVID is strong in Hollywood center around the few things that they do better than anyone else: Large, shared storage work groups. Large projects (features, reality TV) require many people all working on the same media simultaneously. None of the other players can
match Avid’s mastery of this workflow.

So, if this workflow is mission critical to your livelihood, then you’ll choose AVID, and ignore all of the “dinosaur” comments about UI and features. However, if you’re in a small shop, working alone, then
this feature is irrelevant to you and many of the other things that Adobe or FCP X offer will be more appealing. It really comes down to “WHY” you’re making the choice.

    Hope this helps.

August 12, 2015 at 11:32 pm in reply to: OT: Are We Finally Seeing the End of Avid?

Here in Los Angeles, in addition to the previously mentioned Film and TV show market, there is one other bright spot for AVID: the REALITY TV market.

The post process for just about all reality shows is a HUGE group effort. A typical reality show will have anywhere from 20 to 50 people all connected to shared storage (ISIS) using common projects. AVID does this workflow better than any other NLE out there… period. (Yeah, I know that’s an aggressive statement, but it’s true!)

While I don’t question the observations and comments by my fellow cows about the coming demise of AVID, none of you seem to acknowledge the reason for AVID’s dominance in this market. Here’s a clue: They do “sharing” better than anyone else. For me, that’s the primary reason I couldn’t even consider FCP-X on launch. So until you demonstrate a shared workflow that rivals the ease, convenience and common sense of an AVID/ISIS combination, your reports of their demise are premature.

  • Thanks for the clip, Bill. I enjoyed it.

Best takeaway: (Paraphrasing here) “You can’t draw if you don’t have anything in your head to inspire you.. and that inspiration comes from life”.

I’m always telling our younger editors to use some of their free time to go to a museum, to read a book, see a concert, take a trip. You can’t be creative if you don’t have something to draw from. And… when I hear of people working stupidly long days, I wonder where their ideas are coming from. Fatigue does NOT help the creative process. But that’s a discussion for another thread.

  • Bob Z’s business card should read: Promoting disruptive technologies since 1983!

Great article Bob. Thanks for the info.
